Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

Quite agree, my "they" was a generic one and probably aimed more at UK govt as GB has the option to change its own labeling regs regardless of what the EU does. Sadly I think we will lag behind our neighbours as they seem to review and update more readily. I am certainly noticing there are...

Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

Would be good for the consumer if they did. "A blend of Chinese and Vietnamese honey" would certainly give the consumer clearer information and maybe some would make more informed choices. Would imagine there would be some push back from the packers as their labels would need constant...

Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

I did consider trying to screen shot it to share either here or at the bka but thought as I was there with work and did not have the organisers permission thought I best not. There was definitely a representative from the Scottish Bka there so maybe they or if a bbka rep was there they might be...

Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

Filtration happened with the liquid nectar I think prior to drying. The process was not explained in massive detail. But the photo showed trays in a cabinet about the size of an iso container, which I think was a vacuum dryer and silo looking spray dryers. If you Google honey dryer China there...

Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

I attended a webinar yesterday aimed at trading standards and env health officer titled "the global honey supply chain". The speakers were the Food Compositional standards team leader at Defra and the purchasing director for Valeo Foods ( who own rowse honey brand). It was quite clear from the...

ONLINE BEEKEEPING COURSE SUITABLE FOR 14-YEAR OLD

Such a shame. You would have thought with sensible lft testing and managment the risks of camping in a closed group is less than a normal school day or lots of other activities.

ONLINE BEEKEEPING COURSE SUITABLE FOR 14-YEAR OLD

He is quite an outdoor kid a good navigator and has wild camped etc with me quite a bit (ex squaddie but not outgrown bashering out!) So I think he was really looking forward to having a head start over his peers. Hopefully by the time he progresses to silver and gold some normality will return...

ONLINE BEEKEEPING COURSE SUITABLE FOR 14-YEAR OLD

Feel a little sorry for them at the moment as due to Covid my sons school has opted to do a special covid certificate and not the full award. So doing the skill, sport and volunteering elements but not the expedition. Bit of a cop out I think and missing the best bit.

ONLINE BEEKEEPING COURSE SUITABLE FOR 14-YEAR OLD

My 14 year old son is in the same boat, having decided to do beekeeping for his bronze DoE skill. We have used the bbka syllabus to pick which skills he will record and use as evidence. We did look at him doing a beginner course, but he decided he would rather just do it himself and record what...

to vape or not to vape

I switched to vape this year after being a dribbler for my winter treatment. Can't say it's any more effective in treating the varoa, but it is quicker and a bit easier for me I think. I used to trickle with a sheep worming gun and thought that was fine. Have found vaping I can do with out...

    Nat V’s Commercial

Totally agree with comments about commercial supers. I find them far easier to work with (and make) compared to national ones. I dont use any national shallows any more and use either national deeps or commercial shallows as supers.

    Nat V’s Commercial

I run both nats and commercial. Pros and cons to each. I like the flexibility to do demaree, and other manipulations such as vertical splits more easily in nationals but the extra volume of commercial is handy with expansive queens and can make for quicker inspections compared with double brood...

    Gloves & trouser legs...

Full suit, nitriles under cuff if worn and trousers over wellies. If just a Jacket same on the cuffs but Jean's in wellies, do find a few strings in the top of the neoprene if worn that way.

Nucs building up in the spring.

I find over wintered queens in their first "production" year less of a swarmy worry than queens in their 2nd or or even third production year. While the older Q may (or may not be less productive, genetics plays a big part) than an over wintered queen I think the swarm urge could (again genetics...

    Cleaning and Sterilizing Brood Frames

If you want to clean them then a hot solution of washing soda will work much better than cold bleach I think. Dunk in slosh around until wax and gunk is off and a quick rinse with a pressure washer works well. But seems a lot of effort for 20 frames. As above if they are going back on the...

What's flowering as forage in your area

My photo was of a cover crop that had been chopped in in late summer and self seeded, will be interested to see if it over winters and gives early spring flowers. Never come across borage as a crop being planted over winter it was always planted in spring and flowered and harvested in July. I...
