Selling honey from the hives in the UK

Honey Regs give pretty clear guidance on what constitutes honey is and isn't and what can be called honey, they do not exempt it from the requirements of the labelling / Food Information to Customers regs. Retained Reg 1169/11 says that any food intended for supply to the final consumer or to...

Extracting - anyone use fume boards?

I use the Bee Quick when clearing heather supers as don't want to make two trips. I have used them in conjunction with rhombus boards, by the time I have got to the last hive the first one is clear and i can start loading boxes. I do need to make sure the Q is below the rhombus board though as...

    Best ventilated bee suit?

This season i have got a Safter bee vented jacket. Its not the best suit/jacket available but value and coolness is good. I normally wear a full sheriff suit but got this jacket for keeping in the truck and wearing when chucking boxes around or when just doing a quick check or any other time i...

    questionable teaching or not?

Lots of guessing there! None of us were there so I suppose we are all just guessing what the motivations of the "teacher" were. But if it was genuinely culled for being to good, that is a bizarre mindset and also took potentially good genetics out of the local drone pool to be replaced by under...

    questionable teaching or not?

The other thing that confuses me about the wisdom of culling "prolific" queens is that queens genetics is just one factor in in a complex system of factors that will dictate the poor or prolific outcomes of the colony. A mediocre queen in the right conditions of flow and climate etc can need...

    questionable teaching or not?

Not sure why people equate non-prolific with easy to manage. Some of the easiest bees to manage that I have either kept myself or worked commercially have been the most prolific. They have have been placid, non-swarmy and build up in response to the environment/flow,. On the flip side some of...

    Danish oil on honey super

How long do they weather them for? or straight into use? I imagine the climate out there might cause the fumes to dissipate a bit quicker than over winter here. I do think we get over-excited about what we put on the outside of the hives over here.

    Danish oil on honey super

Well you can but only if you set up the go pro camera so we can all see how it goes. (with a banjo soundtrack added in the edit)

    Danish oil on honey super

Don't know much about danish oil but I do remember crosote in use and still have some very old inherited floors the had been treated with this on all surfaces. They would be painted in it over autumn winter and allowed3-6 month weathering before use and the bees never seemed to object so Dani's...

    Danish oil on honey super

Done correctly it produces a really good well preserved box and kills of pathogens on used kit. but unfortunately to do it properly and safely requires the right kit which puts it beyond the reach of all but the large beefarmers. Basically you heat a tank of paraffin/microcrystalline wax to...

Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

Honey generally is one of the most adulterated foods and high value honey like manuka even more so.

    Honey Room Floor

I used two part epoxy from resin coat on my floor impressed by the finish. Not sure if suitable for a wooden floor though.

Making a caught swarm stay put

Pro with a frame of open brood from a donor hive is that they are more likely to stay put the Con is that if they are carrying any disease in their gut there is not the break for them to purge it and so could introduce it. I would not use a brood frame with a random caught swarm but would if it...

    New suit needed

Yes was not saying it as good a quality as either my sheriff or bbwear suits but as a spare I was impressed by the quality for the price. it came with a spare veil too, so that should prolong its life. If I only had a couple of hives and it was not going to get the hammer my suits get I would...

    Fancy a job?

I had an awesome time working at Denrosa, Murray is a great guy to work for and I learnt a huge amount. Hard graft and long hours at times but some of the locations are spectacular and the scale of the operation is a bee geeks paradise. If you have the freedom to do such a job are a hard working...

    2022 Buckfast Queens

Have some 2021BS buckfasts and they are steaming away at the moment. On average they are ahead of my local mongrels in terms of build up. Good guys to do business with too.
