    Ticks

Old hand at tick removal from animals. Once removed area gets an alcohol wash and then antibacterial cream. Feels like tick season started earlier on animals this year (March), maybe with the mild winter? Funny thing is, as a child I wandered the countryside and fished locally for most of the...

    Ticks

Anyone noticing more ticks about this year? removed number five on Sunday this year, number 6 this morning and prevented a seventh latching on after a lunchtime visit to an apiary maybe I'm just tasty

hive ventilation - sauna or chimney?

Wow, not sure where to start with this. Most, if not all, of your discussion points are not exclusive to Warre hives. If you want to expand to review experience with other hive types, search the forum for some very inciteful discussions on others experiences of how to work with the bees rather...

    Asparagus beetle

I was in Basel a few years ago during the asparagus festival in early April. amazing what can be done with it, but didn't notice any after odors in the city. ;) https://www.basellife.com/the-glorious-asparagus/

One example of how long it can take to get a laying queen.

Not a laying queen yet. See how long she lasts, if indeed she comes into lay. I suspect she has had either had limited mating opportunities or was not mated in her prime, and will be superseded sooner rather than later in either eventuality. Please let us know of her outcome.

closest I can find for 25kg bags is BFP, but still more than 5 pounds a kilo, which is crazy https://www.bfp-xpress.co.uk/products/sucranna-granulated-sugar-25kg

    Mail Order Queens

from your web site I believe. Doesn't seem to support the argument for non interventional natural selection you put forward We have never treated, nor manipulated in any way against varroa. We allow nature to take its course in the apiary, and do nothing that might harm the wild bees around...

    Mail Order Queens

whether one treats or does not treat, as soon as a humans started harvesting honey and then came along with a box and frames of convenience, they started impacting the development of the species. The extension to a darwinistic approach seems to ignore our influence however unintended that is...

    Queen cage for varroa control

so wait say 25/26 days for last drone brood to emerge. Let the queen out to start laying up again and first eggs will emerge say a further 20 days later. That's a lot of bees to loose from a stressed colony with a high mortality rate. The open floor method discussed here...

Pre loading mini nucs with brood

I have a 16 frame double mating nuc off of ebay that I'm planning to do something similar with once I receive a breeder queen later in the month

    Cold, wet & windy

if you haven't got any eggs 3 weeks after emergence of the virgin queen, I'd be getting concerned. Trouble is, if you put a frame of eggs in after that, it will be another 5 weeks + before you have a queen mated and new eggs. Colonies going to be thinned out considerably with no replacement...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Its nearly the middle of June. very little surplus nectar being stored in supers limited egg laying / brood break in some colonies Queen rearing results negligible immature drones being uncapped and removed...

    Flow Hives

bodge the national frames into the Langstroth frames. messy and hard work. shook swarm the nuc into brood box. waste of brood and resources, unnecessary stress for bees or get a langstroth nuc / package of bees get another langstroth brood and /or supper. they come in 3 sizes, deep, medium...

    Cold, wet & windy

nothing personal @Wilco , but I'm glad you are finding queen rearing results pi$$ poor as well. Was starting to take it personally!

    Cold, wet & windy

Its not common, but I'm not sure many years have had a 'standard' repeatable pattern in the last decade + I've been keeping bees. Bramble is starting to flower, but not generating a great surplus at this time. If its warm and humid towards the end of the month, lime can produce substantial...

Having had to deal with the issues of internet trained new beekeepers with hives in small back gardens, I feel the premise of the book is irresponsible...

    Potential business startup

And there in lies the dilemma if its a major source of income. Supply too many outlets to maximize money in from honey sales, and risk running out and the disappointed outlets going elsewhere. I think it was here years ago that someone gave the advice that they kept at least a years honey worth...
