    UFE Question

When i’ve made them for nucs i’ve made the entrance smaller using some old bottom bars of frames to fill the space more permanently. I’ve used foam, slotted into the entrance porch bit, to reduce the space over winter in the main hives.

Amm / Native Black Bee Discussion

I generally like this blog, it's a nice place to come and share our lovely AMM pics and experiences, it's a pity it keeps getting hijacked to talk at length repeatedly about something else, just my opinion, but maybe a new thread on Darwinian beekeeping might keep that line of chat for those who...

Institute for Responsible Technology: Mexican beekeepers win fight against Monsanto!

I didn’t realise it was now paid for, wondered why it had gone very quiet!

I’m guessing now is a good time to vape?

With regards to the gas vap needing air holes for flow, it does have holes at the end of the gas inlet tube! I had to go check as I thought maybe mine had burnt though. But if you run water through it you’ll see it flows out. (my) panic over!

    Sunrise today

8.41/3.39, not a great amount of daylight, in the summers though, it’s only dark for a few hours! it’s amazing the difference in one small island!

The law and bee keeping , the use of agricultural land for bees

I noticed the BBKA (if i’m allowed to mention them here) have a map on their site of people looking to have hives in their property, might be worth checking. You could build a bee shed, nobody will ever know they are there! In my garden I have a bee shed, they open out to a meter space with a...

    Sunrise today

“red sky in the morning, sheperd’s warning, red sky at night shepherd’s delight” I always thought the shortest day was the 21st, but I guess not! The sun has been setting not long after 3 here (Scotland), it’s been beautiful with all the snow, the hills are pink just as it sets. This pic...

Do bees have an iq range?

I’ve got a strong colony that does this. I was concerned early this year with all the dead bodies in the grass in front of the hive but as time has gone on I now realise it’s just their style!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Hopefully, our ex CBPV colonies will be strong and resilient having come through it, fingers 🤞

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Moved a couple of hives in the apiary, temp was a balmy 1ºC, the hive that recovered from CBPV this year, was incredibly heavy, and could hear the hum after moving them, so I'm pleased about that, they seem to have come out of it and built up strong for winter. Monday is set to be 12ºC here so...

    Hello from north Scotland

It’s more the roofs blowing away that worries me if there are strong enough gusts!

    Hello from north Scotland

Yes it is handy, and discreet, my immediate neighbours only know they are there because I told them. On a summer day the smell of nectar and honey is intense inside,

    Hello from north Scotland

One of my out apiaries is in a windy exposed site, my hives are always strapped to the ground with ratchet straps and corkscrew ground anchors, just in case!

    Hello from north Scotland

I have a bee shed! It used to house Slovenian hives which are made to go into a building, but I decided they weren’t right for me so I modified the exits and now have two national hives inside. We had built this summer house that had no purpose, so it’s now officially my bee shed!

    Thoughts? What’s Happened Here?

Update on this colony, unfortunately they’ve not made it even into winter. I was up doing my vape yesterday at the apiary and there was no sound at all from this hive and lots of dead looking under the mesh so opened up and could see no bees through the crownboard. On further investigation all...

Added more Fondant- small amount left was frozen- wonder if ever a use for such as this?

David Adam’s advice to feed fondant is that they take it down slower than syrup therefore leaving more room for the queen to lay at a crucial time when she’s laying winter bees.

Beeamond - I thought this was wind up but it looks real

Those bees won’t last long in there, assuming these are designed for homes in cities and there is no way to prevent swarming or disease inspection they seem to be very ill designed and antisocial!
