Keeping a hive inside a shed.

I keep bees in a shed at home, the bees do just fine. They have an escape at the window and the shed clears very quickly after inspections. I have an anti vibration mat under the hive (like you’d get for a washing machine), which helps with any vibrations. The shed will need ventilation...

    First split very nervous

You need to have mature drones in the area first, so approximately 40 days after you see drone brood. You could do a preemptive split approximately two weeks before that.

What's flowering as forage in your area

In Edinburgh yesterday, lots of prunus in flower, gorse, and flowering currant, i’m just outside so usually a week or so behind.

Amm / Native Black Bee Discussion

Checked on the fondant levels yesterday, I have clear crown boards so can see the bees easily. All reasonable sized clusters but one has ten seams of bees already. Granted I can’t see how far down the combs they are but I was surprised. Were generally told AMMs don’t build up very fast in...

    Beekeeping myths

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/282720811_Behavioral_Strategies_of_Virgin_ The bees remove the dead queens but the virgin chews a hole and kills the queen in the cell by stinging her. Queens will also kill other queens on emergence, if emerging at the same time. There are obviously...

    Beekeeping myths

It generally is the case, yes, but depending on the time of year and size of the hive, they can also swarm on supersedure so I suppose it’s not a whole truth either.

Fair enough, I didn’t translate it, i’ll go and turn the engine off!

    Weather

We’ve got some snow and it’s below freezing but fairly normal for this time of year! Not the Beast from the East Mk2 that’s predicted every year at this time.

I’d not seen this, does look interesting. Cheaper driving to France to get it at €217, as opposed to well over £1000 at Thornes!

"The more woody the plant, the darker the honey"

Speaking of dark honeys, I got this in Tenerife, it’s different from our heather honey but the description says it’s mainly heather. Doesn’t taste like our heather either. Very nice though! Also a spring honey.

Veg Availability (split from Podilia's thread)

Exactly. Our supermarket shelves, while they mostly have food, it’s not to the same extent as before (B). Most of the tomato crop is grown under cover in Spain so not really affected by the weather. The point is i’ve seen first hand that food shortages are not an issue elsewhere, but that...

Veg Availability (split from Podilia's thread)

While I agree the media is often not to be believed, this has been gradually happening for a while now with many products. Our supermarkets ran out of tomatoes around the same time I started seeing other people say the same on social media, before the actual media (?) got hold of the story...

I’ve had a look in the members section and it’s not available yet but i’m sure it will be, there are past talks available in there.

    Rodent damage

I have a cat which is a very good mouser, I don’t know how long the poison takes to work (i’m thinking not instantly though) but i’d be devastated if my cat caught one someone had poisoned and got sick or died as a result.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Changed some hive stands in one of my out apiaries, using concrete blocks and wood. It was bothering me for days how I was going to strap the hive to the stand for the remainder of winter (in case of high winds), I didn’t really want to strap them front to back. Then just this morning the...
