i noticed someone doing their first inspection today

It is most probably diluted honey stores you are looking at not nectar.

i noticed someone doing their first inspection today

I always check the nite temps if a do an early inspection as I did the other day and we have had between 9-11°C which is very warm for this time of the year! But the cold nites are back again. No doubt some colonies will be caught out that have over-egged it.

i noticed someone doing their first inspection today

Well, we did have a very warm autumn in my neck of the woods at least which meant that they were brooding later in the season and gobbling up stores. I fed more than last year. They topped up with lots of ivy too in my case which I can smell on occasions in passing the hives!

That suggests to me that BOB is not the culprit however unpopular he, his actions may be.

T shirt weather is very subjective judging by the dress sense of my neighbour. As luck has it, he is not a beekeeper!

Scum/curds floating on honey buckets. Why?

I think what you have got there is the start of fermentation. Water content above 17% allows osmophilic yeasts to start the fermentation process accelerated by the addition of warmth. Fermentation we learnt in a previous thread does not occur below 15°C. Removing of the lids would allow the...

    Very runny honey!!!

Well, if you have just jarred it up and you heated it to liquify it then it will be "thin" for a couple of weeks at least.

i noticed someone doing their first inspection today

I did one of my colonies today 15°C as I was concerned about stores. I am glad I did as they had a small patch of capped brood, a few larvae, but a whole side of eggs on one frame. Gave them a new slab of fondant so they should be ok for the next 14 days even if they brood in earnest...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

That would be the authorities doing the shooting not me. There are shooting parties in the neighbourhood for pheasants for Christmas. The pheasants are left on the road side - bred for sport. Are you having a bad day?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Very nice story. I saved a baby thrush that imprinted on me we called him Ossi. I used to cut up caterpillars for him. He used to fly down to greet me. He made it to adulthood. Occasionally we have a thrush in the garden and we wonder if it is him. About 500 squirrels are shot every year in...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I am trying to keep bees. There is no lack of native hornets where I live presumably because of all the beekeepers. I am not having my bees under siege from hornets if I can do something about it.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I have not as yet, as I hope by destroying their tunnel network they might have moved on. The grey squirrels are a pest in the area destroying my strawberry crop. I would not mind if they ate a few, but they take the green ones and don't even eat them as well as destroying the woodlands in...
