Re Queening A laying Worker Colony

Good! but try and add even a little brood, as it will help the colony. Dont forget it has to be a frame of brood equal to the amount or smaller than the amount of bees you have to keep said brood warm. Even half a frame of brood can be the make or break for a struggling colony in a few weeks...

What hive tool do you use/favour?

You might think that Thor's hammer "Mjolnir" is impressive, but when a beekeeper has a hive tool in his/her hands, their invincible! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re Queening A laying Worker Colony

Sometimes a fast running virgin may just do it! last year as i had cells, i hatched them out and put one virgin, thats was particularly vigorous and running around on the frames, in to a laying worker colony. She mated and did get the colony queen right but it took a while for the colony to sort...

If you have mated queens you can make up nucs even in to October, you need to give them feed and extra stores, but its entirely possible. If your relying on cells mating, then mid august is really your latest, but thats us her in northern France, very similar to south coast of the uk. Drones...

    NBU Varroa warning 27/6/2017

Continuing to roll Drones as and when they turn up between the frame cover and top of frames etc, generally levels are looking low, but i dont think that will hold. Most years we get a good brood break here in out dearth mid to late august! will start vaping regardless mid august. i want my...

    Laying workers

firstly, be sure you have laying workers and not a drone laying queen. often confused, but most easy diagnosis is the absence of multiple eggs in cells and fairly even distribution of neatly laid drone cells in a drone laying queen(not worker cell brood obviously) i make a decision here, if its...

    Bees Absconding from mating nucs

Our mating nucs are far too strong, i am shaking out bees tomorrow, big time! our flow is good too, stinking hot! luckily I have harvested most queens otherwise (i am thinking they would abscond too) . new ones going in tomorrow morning after shaking out bees...

    Cell finishers

I have a nagging question i cant answer. Does the arrival of queen cells being finished, in a cell finisher, on a strong colony affect the queens behaviour if she cant get in to contact with the cells that are being finished. Is she able to detect their presence (if she cant physically find them...

    First 2017 Queen

I agree, I've been marking mine at virgin stage and never looked back. You can find them a lot easier in the mating nucs, or nucs and their so much easier to mark at virgin stage, the whole process of having to mark them after mating is then not necessary (which takes usually double the time)...

    Queen Cells in drone-laying colony

Not a stupid question! it gives hope to many that there might be a queen on the way, well unfortunately it never hatches and often rots in the cell, or just becomes a drone. I see this all the time in laying worker colonies. I think its something this overlooked and not talked about much, but...

Using queen cells on day 3 after grafting.

Thanks for posting this Anduril! all i can say is ours went in fine, but you need your cells close to your mating nucs, and you need warm weather, to reduce the chance of getting them chilled. (well according to the article Larry Connor says this isn't a real issue) Will report back on the...
