    A distressing sight

    Thanks Redpig.
  2. The Poot in Somerset

    A distressing sight

    Yes please.
  3. The Poot in Somerset

    Winter feeding.

I’ve read over feeding around now could induce late swarming. Perhaps another myth JB? I intend to vape into September then feed from there.

    Wasp Out

Bees don’t know what they’re missing...
  5. The Poot in Somerset

    A distressing sight

Thanks Dani, perhaps a little project for the Winter months ahead. It will help with the wasps too - it’s nightmarish in the apiary at the moment, but the bodged on tunnels are working at least at the moment...
  6. The Poot in Somerset

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Removed three supers and extracted all of one bucket of honey 28 lbs🙁 I have one more super to remove and hope it’s fully capped. At least today’s honey was between 17.5 and 18.5 on the hygrometer.

Can you spot the queen? Don't spoil it for others though, please

Bit of a struggle with the second one Steve, but found her. Good practice for a bloke who never finds his queens!

Can you spot the queen? Don't spoil it for others though, please

I think I’ve found her.... I look forward to (hopefully) confirmation tomorrow....
  9. The Poot in Somerset

    A distressing sight

Hi, I’ve only been through one Winter with Abelo - and only one colony was all Abelo, whilst others were part poly, part cedar. The all poly was ahead of the rest in Spring build up terms. The only things I don’t like about Abelo poly are: The plastic surfaces for strength are good but the boxes...
  10. The Poot in Somerset

    Part capped frames

Please remind me - how small is the hole when feeding back above a crown board?
  11. The Poot in Somerset

    Wasp Out

I would think ok for a strong colony. I find the bunch of bees trying to get in through a small entrance also prevent the wasps from getting in and they defend each other from predation.
  12. The Poot in Somerset

What did you do in the Apiary today?

    Killed wasps again.
  13. The Poot in Somerset

    Is Chinese honey legally honey?

More likely to insist on it to encourage “made in Britain”. Or is that just wishful thinking?🙄
  14. The Poot in Somerset

    Wasps and Bees

No, it’s water. My neighbour moans about how many bees visit her pond!
  15. The Poot in Somerset

What did you do in the Apiary today?

    Happy days👍
  16. The Poot in Somerset

    Eggs

It’s quite extraordinarily, I do too.
  17. The Poot in Somerset

    Wasps and Bees

Hi, I find it best to try to keep the boxes covered as you take them off, I use pieces of ply cut to size, which prevents too many bees flying as well as reducing the risk of wasp entry. Also you could use something like a tea towel to keep frames covered as you inspect. I try to do the...

    Wasps and Bees

Found the nest and the small tunnel into the bank. I stuck my gas weed wand into it, fired it up and gave them a half minute blast. Not a single wasp came out after me😜👍🐝
  19. The Poot in Somerset

Being employed and managing 200+ colonys.

You know you want to, but is it sensible?
