    Clover types... question

As said here allready couple of times, crawling white clover works best and is easiest,i mow this patch of grass once a week at max hight of the mowerblades,if i mow in the morning first new flowers sticking their head up by evening.Other clovers are bit more tricky,as luzern for instance needs a...

    Courgettes as nectar source

excactly, the list is a guidance to a potential, but wether conditions will always have an influence, just as the choise present,if they have the choise lets say between 6 acres of sunflowers and 6 plants of helenium.....

What's flowering as forage in your area

The real big volume forage here,nectar/honey wise is first willow, folowed by orchards cherry, plumbs, apples, then acasia and as last Linden. But to give them a broader choise in pollen we sow in 2 acres of native wildflowers ourself, joined by a half an acre bee and butterfly garden with way over...

    Failed Nuc

Prob stupid question i guess but you say as fast as you swap them out,so,bit wundering the new ones y've put in were open brood, right, they need 1 to 3 day old larvae to pull q bubbles on.I don't see them filling up open brood with honey ,at worst they close them off without pulling q bubbles.If...

    Record year?

It was real good production wise, volume, not so "wow" taste wise,it rained on the acasia, was dry for the linden, there was still greenfurtuliser blossoming early spring cause lack of frost, everything that could go wrong tastewise went wrong and even our cherryhoney ended up with this caramel...

    Nuc to Hive

What we do first is putting a second lvl on the nuc, filled with builded out frames kept aside after last honeyswing, only when that double decker gets too small we transfer them to a regular big hive,if it doesn't get filled up enough to go into winter we take two slow/meager frames out and put...

    Some questions from a newcomer

I gladly answer your question number 4,i've no clue about the British sizes,we work dadant blatt,we don't use a special broodchamber size,so all levels have the same size(honey super),it works as a charm and has the advantage you can reposition your frames what ever way you want they always fit.

    Hive lost to wasps.

We closely monitor all our hives, still, sometimes we get caught by surprise,a q stopped laying for instance ,and we reacted bit late we almost always solve that with hanging in a frame with closed brood from a strong healthy hive.If the hive did fall back too much we sometimes even house them bit...

Leaving the bees a super of honey for the winter

We leave the super on top, same prob here, way too much honey,1300 kg swung,so now 9 hives out of 19 are with a filled super on top, ofcourse the q restrictor removed; What part she will use to lay eggs is not important for us,in spring as harvest preparation, the hives getting put on the renson...

Home made fondant- either Gels or hard crystal ?

Hej,this is how we do it.For starters,in spring,as soon as we see enough fresh pollen and nectar starts coming in,first harvest pre-preparation, we take out all left over winterfood. That gets swung and kept aside.Mid august we prepare our paste by mixing starchfree powdered sugar with this kept...

Asian hornets in the UK. A chance of stopping them?

First nest i found by triangulation this year was at 1800 meters, one visited clock steady every 70 minutes,so 35 minutes single distance. One thing we learned was that these "flighttimes" are sort of unreliable,at 300 meters from the nest the marked ones came sometimes every 10 minutes sometimes...

    Just a little intro.

They showed up in our region in Belgium first time now this year.As soon as i noticed them in front of the hives it took me a day or 10 before i had a clear look at the fly away direction.Went and placed a lurepot 800 meters SW,tried to find a reverse direction spot to start triangulation, but it...

    Hopelessly queenless

Don't take this wrong please, but didn't you do a weekly check up to see if the q was laying eggs, depending when she died or stopped laying a new q will not be enough to safe that hive, keeping in mind that the present bees getting old and the new bees getting born takes 21 days,so if you lead in...

    Just a little intro.

My mate and me run good 32 hives atm plus another 20 apidea's with spare q's,and yes, those tiny apidea's make it each year through the winter with zero fails,as it is we just passed our 8th season without any hive losses,so,the breed we own and the system we work them is more than...
