What did you do in the Apiary today?

Why would an iPad change unripe to unrepentant??? Weird.
  2. The Poot in Somerset

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Wrapped my supers (wet and dry) in bin bags and stacked in the garage with wooden sheets under and over. Three more, currently being cleaned, to do on Tuesday. Washed and dried the extractor, covered it and stored in its Winter position. Stuck Abelo crown board discs over the vents and unstuck...

    Happily queenless

Shaking them out might be best and the bees will strengthen the colonies that receive them. I did this a few weeks ago for exactly the same scenario. It was a manic hour or so with bees everywhere, but by the morning all was well. I was relieved afterwards as the colony was a concern and wasps...

    Give bees more room

    Nice one😀

    Wasp woes

That’s awful! When you restart make some underfloor entrances - see JBM’s plans - as I’m assured they take care of the wasp problem.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I will guess it’s robbing, but a small swarm was captured in West Moors high street last week. Reported by my sister in law.

    High mite count

I had this same issue on one hive out of four last year. Just keep on vaping and you will defeat the little sods.
  9. The Poot in Somerset

    Wasp woes

Had the same on my cherries and plums until I found and destroyed two nests. They were really dopey this year, I think the fruit made them drunk and they would fall out of the trees. Still got some now, but manageable amounts and the bees are no longer under constant attack. You have my...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Took last two supers off, spun out about four pounds of honey for my efforts. Sweaty socks honey too. Two back on for cleaning. Fed fondant to one. Once supers are off after cleaning, hives are configured for Winter. OA vaping from next week, then feeding. My wasp issue has gone away -...

    Wasp Bane

Thanks Pat, things got so bad here my other half bought me two. I have destroyed two wasp nests close to the apiary since and things are a lot better. The Wasp Banes do appear to be a cut above the other traps I’m using. Thanks for the update and I hope the rest of the season goes well for you.

    Hornet in Barry

    Wonderful beasties and not aggressive

    Formula 1 racing

Just boring even at the race track. The most exciting part of the whole experience is trying to get out of the car park to go home.

Spring must of been good, for my girls to travel four miles to the osr.

I’ve seen this along roadsides assuming it’s osr. It’s identifiable by its seed heads apparently. Another import from Southern Europe that is enlarging it’s range.

    Plastic foundation

Plastic just doesn’t sit right with me....

Honey extraction process: Request for advice.

This has been an issue for me in prior years and I’ve not reduced their space as much as I could/should. Having said that the bees have overwintered well despite my failures. The key I think, is to ensure the hives are well insulated at the top. This year I will be more bold in reducing the...

When would be your final inspection of the year!

Final super to come off this weekend, then vape treatment and feeding as required. Should be done and dusted before the end of the month.

    Swarm Prevention

Worth experimenting with on a couple of colonies I think.

    Swarm Prevention

Nice one. This was just another thing I left too late because of work constraints leading up to furloughing. I intend to try this next season along with opening up the broodnest as recommended by Michael Bush. Cheers,

    HELP - Hornets

I would like to agree, as I don’t like killing anything, but this year has been different. It was not just the bees under siege, but anything that moved outside. I have destroyed two wasp nests within 50 yards of the apiary and another a little further away. I have left a fourth one alone as...
