    Carbonate crown boards

Did you buy the poly locally and what’s it like to cut / screw?

Why are Nationals so popular? (and other advice appreciated)

The network effect is very relevant. My first bees came from a lady using Langstroths, I’m on nationals. She /we had to cut the wax and tie onto my frames with elastic bands. She took several stings and it was a right old faff. In retrospect I think adopting single box Langstroth would have...

    Storm Francis

I do hope they’re ok. I really like collared doves, they are such inoffensive birds and heavily predated. It’s amazing how their nests do stay in one piece in wind at all, but last night was excessive. Cheers Steve.

Over crowded hive - what to do?

I had exactly that issue last year - where the queen got into the supers after stacking the half brood with them. Enrico gave advice to prevent this. I made a couple of ekes and effectively make two stacks - the supers on the upturned roof and the half brood on an eke. He also advised covering...

Over crowded hive - what to do?

The inflexibility I find is because the brood frames are not all the same size. If you want to move them around to open up the brood nest, you are limited to manipulations in the single boxes only - you can’t move frames up from brood to half brood, or vice versa. Also if you have brood mainly...

    No sign of any Varroa!

No advice, but that’s really interesting. Not come across bee tobacco, but if it contains nicotine, perhaps it is killing mites?? Nicotine is after all a deadly poison. I await further posts with interest.

    Thanks Jenks😊

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Jarred 26 lbs of honey at 18.5 percent Shook out failed colony being invaded by wasps.

    Colony shake out mess up

Hi, I could do with some advice re the above. The situation: Really big colony on brood and a half plus three supers. 31st May found queen cells, did AS leaving one. June 7th found queen cell with the hinged base open - assumed queen had emerged. Since then, no evidence of eggs or queen...

    unhatched brood becoming uncapped

Might make sense to fit a tunnel entrance as the wasps have already got into the hive - see posts on wasp out etc for easy home made quick fixes. They really do make a difference.

Over crowded hive - what to do?

Good advice, the removal of the nadired super in Spring can be replaced later with a second brood box. That allows a great deal more flexibility within the hive and between hives through the Summer. Brood and a half becomes very restrictive and inflexible - as I have learned this year.

    Varroa treatment survey

OA vape through September - as many as necessary to achieve minimal drop. OA vape in December/January Same planned for 2020/2021

I wish you all the best for it. Just remember that if it doesn’t pan out, you’ve lost nothing and you can look for the next opportunity. Exciting though isn’t it?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I didn’t intend to quote you Jenks, it’s an error. But as I have and can’t undo it, I have to say you are an old pedant😀 Therefore... back to what was done in the apiary... I tracked down a pretty big wasp colony, in the ground by the school field. Gave it weed wand down the tunnel, twice, then...

Six children? Now I understand why you want to be out of the house so much😜

    Any idea what these are?

Hi, My daughter has inadvertently dug into a nest of these little bees. She could see larvae in cells. All digging has stopped and the area covered against the rains forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Some sort of mining bee?

Amount of brood at this time

That seems leaving things late for varroa treatment, if the supers can’t be left on during treatment. By September isn’t it getting late to treat, in order to prevent “winter bees” being affected by varroa?

Try to find out who you would be reporting to if not the MD, then seek an interview with him/her to find out about the previous beek and why the vacancy exists. If there’s a guarded response to your questions or a lack of honest information, you’ll know not to get involved.
