    Thoughts on this location?

Best answer is try a couple of hives now, or as soon as you can. Then you will have all the summer holidays for them to bed in without too many children around getting in the way and you can establish 'traffic' patterns and see where the bees go. Otherwise come September, when school starts...

Trapping hornets with a glue sheet

The problem I have with them is they're just glue. they tire the insect to exhaustion and death, the lucky ones 'drown' in the glue. Why the sticky stuff doesn't have a poison in it is never explained. Rentokil sell their sunflower traps for insects, and the traditional fly paper are all...

Hi from a school in the midlands

This forum won't allow me to post links to the BBKA website but if you go there and search on schools they have various documents on schools keeping bees including a model risk assessment. Or look in the section entitle 'Junior Beekeeping".

My bees must be doing it wrong...

in edge if you then right click the image you've opened in the new tab, one of the options is "search the web for image" this will then bring up lots of similar or the same images, often with different titles. This can then be useful if someone has edited the image, you can find out what the...

Using just top bars in national supers

Sounds like a Warre hive. They have top bars but no sides, the problem is the comb get's stuck to the side of the box and you then need to be able to separate it from the box to get the (quite delicate) frame out. Warre owners have a special angled knife with a long handle for the job...

Advice needed - bees in chimney

Don't seal the chimney totally put a metal mesh (5mm or less hole size) in to allow some airflow, most chimneys have vents in them to keep the damp under control. My association recommends UK Bee Removers, Home - UKBR.org most of these organisations will do a survey first. The expense comes...

    busy swarm season

A few swarms, a lot more nests that have 'only just' been discovered. The thing our association lacks is swarm collectors, there's only 2 regular ones out of a membership of 95 or so. No one's interested in collecting this year for some reason.

    Cowbridge food festival

I feel your pain, when I was collecting milk from farms one night in my 32 ton tanker I overshot an entrance on a very narrow county lane. Either side of the lane were deep ditches, and with no moonlight, uphill and backwards it was not the most fun I've ever had even though the backup lights on...

    Wartime stories

It might have been a story in a similar vein to that of airmen eating carrots to get high levels of vitamin C to improve their night vision and increasing their success in night fighters. Whereas the real reason the night fighters were getting better results was due to the then secret airborne...

Nasty behaviour in the veggie plot

Either that or the bee thought it was Lassie and was trying to get Jamez to come and rescue someone.

    Cut out advice

Use elastic bands not string, believe me you don't want to be fafing around tying knots in honey laden string. A bee vac if you have access to one would be an asset as you could use it to very temporary holding pen for bees while you cut out the comb. Take care when taking the shed apart...

    Sore finger tips

No direct experience but would a thing called a 'finger cot' or 'stool' work inside or outside the glove. A search on Amazon produces loads of results in different materials, many are listed as 'waterproof'. They would then pad out the ends of your fingers better and put another layer between...

Masonry bees coming down chimney flue

This company sort of farms red mason bees but you have to join their programme to benefit from the cocoons they provide. https://www.masonbees.co.uk/ If you join now you won't benefit until next year.

    Asian Hornet - Folkestone

Media reports on the sightings with pictures: https://www.itv.com/news/meridian/2023-04-25/warning-to-public-after-invasive-asian-hornets-spotted-in-kent-and-dorset Shame the photo taker on the ferry didn't have the foresight to stand on it? The problem with the one on the ferry is to my mind...
