Natural England article on 'Non/Native' bees?

The simplest solution might be to ask them? Natural England although as a government department you'll probably get a long reply that says nothing. Have you tried asking the NBU? They might know where the Nature England stance comes from.

    Mystery nibbler!

Get yourself a trail camera setup in front of the hive. That will settle the question for certain.

What have you had under your roof?

A few years ago in the spring I was confronted with this bumble bee when I went to remove my mouse guards. It was still alive but had scraped all it's tail fur off trying to get free, I ended up cutting the mouse guard to let it go. My bees didn't seem to be overly bothered by it.

    Selling Lip Balm

The Welsh Beekeepers Association are running a Webinar on 2nd December 7:30 pm about the rules and regulations related to cosmetics products. As the invite says share as widely as possible, all welcome, I thought I'd post it here. If you're interested in taking part you will need to register...

    Another Hornet species in France.

Wikipedia suggests it's range already includes Southern Europe including the 'foot' of Italy. So Marseilles isn't too much of a stretch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oriental_hornet#/media/File:Vespa_orientalis_Distribution_Map2.svg here's the full article: Oriental hornet - Wikipedia The...

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

Here's a story that predates the Blenheim one by many years from dear old Wales which you might find interesting. I'm sure many on this list know or know of Robert, he is still around but I'm afraid I don't know how he got on with his quest for native bees...

Asian Hornet nest discovered in Portsmouth

Hi Peter, you probably don't know the answer to this, and to be honest I doubt the NBU do either but do you know if the varroa mite affects the AH as they both hail originally from the same part of the world, or are there other specific parasites on the hornets that we may need to be aware of...

Asian Hornet nest discovered in Portsmouth

I know AH predates our bees but do you know if it does the same to social wasps ?

    Mushrooms

The problem with wild mushrooms is you really need an expert to be standing in front of them to determine their safety. For instance here's a photo from Wikipedia (full article here: Mushroom poisoning - Wikipedia ) File:Phalloide-Caesarea.JPG - Wikipedia Both young mushrooms, both look...

    Selling Lip Balm

Here's another company (copied from the now closed CBD honey thread) that does testing and the page also lays out all the UK / EU requirements: https://medicpro.london/cosmetic-safety-assessment-uk/ The page does imply that you need a part A and a part B test if you're selling into the EU...

    Making candle moulds

A better bet than the silicone process as described might be to use paint on latex, I used to get all my moulding supplies from this company https://maragon.co.uk/arts-and-crafts.html#Init You would also need an outer layer of plaster of paris or plaster impregnated bandage to support the...

    Goose grass seedlings

Would covering the plot with black plastic and carpet for the winter work? The plastic stops the light getting in so the plants can't photosynthesize, the carpet keeps the plot warm which forces all the seeds to germinate, then no light so they die too and the covering prevents too much water...

    Wellies.

A local smallholder suggested in a book he wrote that you should keep all your old wellies as it's usually only one of them that splits or needs replacing and if you're lucky you will have a 'pair' in all the saved ones, so long as you're not too precious about having them match.

    Bee friendly insecticide

Here's the problem though, that BBKA quote talks about 'Pesticide', which is an all encompassing word that can mean both insecticide as per the OP or herbicide which is still widely used on farms, Roundup (Glyphosate) for instance is quite common. So the question is what do the BBKA mean by...

    "Wobbly Bee"

Three letter acronyms (TLA's) and other jargon are quite common in all sorts of different clubs and organisations, they add a certain air of exclusivity, a level of 'I'm an expert' and you're an acolyte or a beginner, come with me on the journey and you too will gain the knowledge. Also they...

    Never had colonys like it.

Wikipedia is great for historic things and science. It's generally the modern contemporary and contentious stuff that's less likely to be correct as a 'peoples editor' with an axe to grind can change an entry to reflect their own personal views.

    Moron of the day ....

I'm surprised a farmer who's use of chemicals is regulated in his professional life couldn't see how using a chemical in a way that was not approved was a good idea? Presumably he's not repeated the exercise so he got your message?

    Has anyone used this?

I've never used the trickle method. Why open up the hives in the dead of winter thus letting all that carefully produced heat out, to treat bees that should have already been treated when the hive was closed up for the winter? Does anyone do any sort of testing (sugar roll?) to see if there's...

    Cleaning a Konigin extractor

The other reason I saw, which actually applies to washing fat off pots and pans is that if you use hot water it softens the wax / fat. When the warm water / wax solution then hits the cold water in your U bend it solidifies and will block or speed up the blocking of the drain.

    Posting Cut Comb

If you intend to post it yourself, the first step would be to put the frame into a plastic bag and Sellotape it shut so nothing can leak. If it were me (and I've sent glass and china through the post with no breakages before) I'd use a technique called double wrapping. First you wrap your frame...
