    Old frames for bait hive

One of my '22 "to-do's" is set up a bait hive. I have a couple of old dark frames that came from a demaree last season which I wanted to use. Some very light wax moth damage, but don't imagine that's an issue. Only potential problem is a few (5-10% give or take) of the cells are "wet" (glisten...

    Queen failure spring plan

From a hive that had cbpv last summer and seemingly recovered (thanks to insight from the forum), sealed queen cells in mid/late October (for reference I'm in Wilts), almost no activity compared to the others in the apiary and now hefting very light, as a beginner I felt an impulse to have a...

    Queen failure spring plan

Definitely not the old Q as she was marked and this one isn't. As you say can't do anything now so hanging on for a month or two more.

    Queen failure spring plan

Popped crownboard to check for any brood, 2nd frame I lifted I saw a fat queen. No brood on the two frames lifted so I guess an unmated/failed queen? Still advise to shake out or try requeening in early spring?

    Queen failure spring plan

Cheers, With the frames/comb, is it ok to immediately re-use? Colony had some CBPV earlier last year which they got through ok. Or would you suggest binning it all and starting fresh ?

    Queen failure spring plan

Coming to conclusion that one of my hives has gone through winter Q- or with a failed Q following a very late attempt at supercedure/swarming. When I come to confirm this in spring what should i do with the remaining bees? Shake them out or something else? Thanks

What caused my colonies to fail?

Just a quick question. Is you winter configuration a double brood plus super?

    GasVap frustrations

Does that mean the Apibioxal doesn't work well as a vaping option? Or just because it contains extra stuff that gums equipment up?

    Late season queen cells!

    Late season queen cells!

Photo of board attached. As can be seen cluster small and right on the edge of board. Lot less than was seen last time checked.

    Late season queen cells!

I'm just surprised there are still bees in there if no Q. I would have imagined any brood from late September would have expired by now.

    Late season queen cells!

Unfortunately not. I did replace it so can get an image in the next day or so if there's anything on it.

    Late season queen cells!

Short update and query; Having pretty much left the colony alone since last post as it is now a binary outcome, I'm at the midwinter treatment consideration stage. Put in the inspection boards to check brood/broodless status - and noticed brown/light brown wax debris amongst the white of the...

    Late season queen cells!

Briefly popped into broodbox at the weekend (was like a summers day) to check one of the cells but didn't get a chance to remove one... Saw a couple that had sides being chewed away and clearly had workers still stuck in head 1st, and saw a couple more with the classic open hinged top so I...

    Late season queen cells!

Yes, have treated but not recently. Did a course of Apiguard at tail end of August which ended early Sep. Unless someone else has a better plan, I'm going to see what the bees end up doing.. Guess will have to wait and see what happens.

    Late season queen cells!

I've got everything crossed.. I thought the bees knew what they should be doing but this doesnt sound sensible... Is it too late to get in a new mated queen and introduce - assuming there are some around?
