    High mite count

I tested my pan/battery setup in the open and it took about 3m. Then in practice I saw the pan still had a lot of OA left in the 2nd run. So I retested in the open, this time for 2 runs. I found by the second run the battery was loosing stank and it took longer to vape the OA. My battery did...

    High mite count

Just read your thread. I am assuming you intended to link the fogger, rather than battery. I did not realize it was a fogger rather than GasVap when I posted the link. But I am sure I can get a GasVap for around tat price point. Fogging/misting is not an approved application method in the UK...

I am guessing fogging is not an approved application method.

    High mite count

I vape each hive for 4m, then let it sit for 6m. So 10m per hive + 10/15m faf time. Probably closer 30m. I use one of these as a battery: https://www.amazon.co.uk/NOCO-GB40-UltraSafe-Lithium-Starter/dp/B015TKUPIC I thought about getting a bigger capacity or second battery. But a second pan...

    Sending honey in the post

Posted lots of honey. No need for fancy boxes. A good tip like Mel says is is to roll a piece of thick card around the jar to make a tube, make it longer than the jar, then pack the ends so the jar stays in the middle. then box the tube with some more filler and it should be bomb proof. Its...

    High mite count

Thanks for your kind words. I did not want to say, it but I find it depressing too. As least its reassuring to know its not just my hives that suffer this cycle. Its just depressing when you pull that board hoping to see some progress, but all you see is 100+ mites , and you have only pulled...

    High mite count

No. I treat once the supers are removed. Then treat again in march/April before the supers go on. For the 2 full years I have kept bees numbers are extremely low in march/april, then very high in September. It seems the numbers increase rapidly some time after may. Unfortunately treatment...

    High mite count

This years update: I have not been counting or tacking photos this year as I have been too busy. But this autumns counts have been bad again - very bad. So far I have vaped all 4 hives 5 times each and am still getting drops of about 500-1000 in each hive! I just dont understand how 2 years...

    Anyone recognise this hive?

Another thought - could it have been taken on one of those old cameras that you had to stand still for? Maybe someone with knowledge of camera history would know by the date? If so there may have been bees going in and out that we cannot see.

    Anyone recognise this hive?

To me it looks like a hive cozy. It looks like it has been intentionally positioned to reduce the entrance too. The bit I am not sure about it at the top on the front. It almost looks like there is a flap to lift and access a top entrance. There is some nice chunky timber in the legs though.

    Wrapping Beehives for Winter

The king span style insulation is better, but you can use the polystyrene stuff too, just go 75-100mm if you do. I saw a vid where a guy uses an empty super and a bin bag of fiber wool - it was what he had to hand. The king span works out not too expensive if you buy a big bit and chop it down...

    Your highlights of the season.

I tried making some cut comb this year. I put 2 or 3 cut comb frame in some supers. I was very please with the results. I found a nice box that holds a frame of CC, so cutting and packing was very easy. I really enjoyed the whole process, right from researching different methods to reaping...

Do I need Oxalic acid treatment for bees in December?

I read some papers a while back about the harmful effects of trickling. They concluded that that the act of trickling sugar syrup onto bees was detrimental, more so the cooler the weather. Hive performance was gauged by observing the build up the following spring. Just to be clear the papers...

    Honey gate - Non drip?

I find the easiest way to stop the drip is just to lick it. Would anyone like to buy a jar of honey?

    Honey price

I think you hit the nail on the head with your point about many amature keepers being well off. And they may indeed contribute a little to the devaluation of honey. But at least they sell good quality honey. I still think its the supermarket syrup that is the real problem, not only are they...

Can putting wet super on hives make bees bad tempered?

I may go dry storage next year if I have problems putting wets on again. But wet storage just seems easier to me, so would like to stick with it if I can.

Can putting wet super on hives make bees bad tempered?

Thanks. So you guys suspect its smell attracting wasps/bees and triggering defensive behavior. Rather than them getting drunk and aggressive. I did remove a large wasp nest from my neighbors house witch was very close to my hives. I cannot recall exactly when it was, but that may also have...

Can putting wet super on hives make bees bad tempered?

Sorry, missed the other thread. I will see if I can find it. Supers went on all 4 hives at the same time, I did not see any robbing. But a lot of bees were coming out and just flying in circles the day they wet on.

Can putting wet super on hives make bees bad tempered?

I put wet supers on my hives that had been over wintered for the first tie this year. I have 4 hives in my garden, and bees are normally well tempered. I had taken a Friday off work and popped on supers. Then that weekend my bees were a bit nutty, one neighbor got stung when mowing her lawn...
