Identifying the climatic drivers of honey bee disease in England and Wales

The whole paper reads like they were looking for a climate/disease correlation from the get go. I think it is note worthy to point out the paper accepts climate change and an increase in temperature in the UK as a certainty. (Because climate models have such a great track record!) They...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Sounds pretty much the same as my setup. I think the netting helps deter wasp attacks too. They dont seem to like the steep decent or lack of space to maneuver.

    Insulation

I was told it looses most of its effectiveness if its not the exposed/outer surface. So the insulation properties of the foil will be negligible compared to the PIR/polly when installed in a hive roof. At least going on what I was told. But your point about detecting radiated heat makes sense...

    Insulation

A few points on insulation. The foil layer on insulation is to reflect radiated heat and is only effective if it has an air gap in front (it is widly misunderstood and missused). So for a bee hive will pretty much do nothing. So dont bother tin foil coating yore polystyrene as its a waste of...

    High mite count

I got results again from hives Hives 1&2. They just had their 2nd new system vape, and 48h numbers we up (from about 10) to about 30-50. They were the first hives vaped with new system and i think i lost too much smoke. But moving the pan position away from the door and allowing a 2m cool down...

As I have said before I can get 2 runs from my battery. I have not noticed any difference between powder jumping on runs 1 or 2. But my battery is an Li that keeps good amps to near flat. So maybe it would be more obvious on a NiCa or Lead Acid. But if I were to guess, I would expect less...

    High mite count

I sometimes get the "crust" too. I had also thought about using some tinfoil to increase the height of the sides of my pan. How did you try modding yours? I have read studies into OA dosing. And from what I have read the required doses are actually surprising small. So even if you loose 25%...

I have noticed more powder jumping on colder/damper days too. I keep my pan in a damp shed, witch probably does not help.

    High mite count

I was told the powder jumping out the pan can be because of damp powder. So got some new powder and had same problem. Tried the brand name powder too, better, but still happening. I have seen it happen when test panning in the open. It happens when the vapor erupts, sometimes some powder gets...

Very interesting reading. When I ran mine out in the open, it seems to sit thee doing nothing, then it liquefies and evaporates very quickly in a big puff, then a small amount keeps coming off the an pan a while after. My pan often throws out powder onto the board too. So I wonder if my pan...

Basic chargers are normally cheap, but when you start adding all the bells and whistles like overcharge protection and cell balancing, the price goes up quickly. But I may keep an eye on ebay and see if I can snipe a good used one on the cheap. I have plenty of time before next year.

    Too late for Varroa treatment?

You raise a very interesting point. If we had never treated the mites, than the bees may have adapted of their own accord by now. And so long as we keep treating, they never will. But that's not necessarily the case. The relationship could also have ended up like Pandora Fungus and Aphids...

My battery booster thing was about £80. So £80 + a charger is not too bad considering it can vape more than 2 hives. However chargers can get pricey. But I think a good QA traetmnt system is well worth investing in. I am still a bit undecided about the leaving the door open thing. I have been...

    High mite count

Vaped 2 hives today with new system. Took about 15-20m inc all faf - much better. Also got 48h counts from the other 2 hives, they were about 50 each. So getting there.

I am going to think on this one. Just dont know if I should bother investing in any more pan kit tbh. I think I will limp through this year with the kit I have, then look into costs before making a final decision. And see how panning goes with the new system. I have the panI posted earlier...

Bobba Pan faff - 15m per hive. I did originally let the hives sit for 15m after vaping when I started. I blieve it was you who recommended I reduce that time. Sublimox looks great, but I want something without a power cord.

Thanks, some great tips. I do indeed faf around shutting entrances. If I do as you say, pull the pan as soon as the OA has vaped. Then reload why its still warm (not hot), I know from testing I can vape 2 at 3m a piece. So I may even be able to get 3 done. Thanks again for the help as...
