Should we leave varroa board under the Mesh Floor in winter?

I keep mine open except when vaping. I thought that was the point of OMF. Maybe if I had a weak colony with a small cluster of was overwintering a nuc, but for a healthy hive it open for me.

    Honey dehumidifiers/driers

They do gobble electricity if running consistently in a humid environment. But I you use instead of a heater the cost is offset. Also if you set it to say 50% RH, the humidifier will turn off when the room is dry enough. So if you done keep letting more humidity in it wont keep running. I...

    Honey dehumidifiers/driers

I use one of these in my extraction room, it pulls a lot of water from the air (at least 10l per day in my room) wich helps prevent honey adsorbing moisture from the air when extracting...

New way to help honey bees to fight Varroa mites

I thought this video was quite interesting even if the title was a bit click bait. More like a new way to help select for hygienic bees.

Poll: Should it be legal to use the word "Raw" on labels to describe unheated, non-pressure filtered honey

I take issue with the term "pressure filtered". I think is is safe to assume we all filter our honey to some extent. But I think if the aperture on the filter is too small and it starts removing pollen, than is should no longer be called raw. So I dont think it matters if the honey is...

It's going to be a late one

I think you are bang on the money. The machine is expensive, takes a lot of space and is complicated to operate. As you say, all is well when things go to plan, but when things start going wrong a lot of time can get wasted problem solving and re-running tests. What you say about the minimum...

It's going to be a late one

I may have access to all the gear to do pollen analysis. We recently got a Flow Cytometer at our work. however I have no idea if it is suitable for pollen analysis. Its still the new toy and no one is particularly good at using it yet. We got the machine to do one specific tack, so it sits idle...

    Jars prices on the rise

That is what I did last year, this years crop was not so good, so jars should last even longer than planned. These are the Jars I use, not everyone style I know, but the customers like them. https://www.jazjar.co.uk/collections/round-jars/products/380ml-1-lb-round-jars Prices have gone up...

Installing Kingspan/Celotex above the Crown Board

I could see the edges glowing like hot metal, so am confident its Aluminum. Ok, If we gona get all technical and stuff. I tested it for conductivity and it is conductive. Its also non-magnetic. So It looks like we have a non-ferrous conductive silver-colored metal in this case. Doing a...

Installing Kingspan/Celotex above the Crown Board

I just pealed a little bit of foil off some Kingspan (as in actually branded Kingspan) and tried burning it. I can confirm it is definitely foil - hence my initial assumption it would stand up well to UV.

Installing Kingspan/Celotex above the Crown Board

Thanks for the warning Danni. Like I said, I assumed it would hold up pretty well to UV. But some brands may hold up better than others, so probably best to take no chances. If I ever get round to making them I think will defo wack on some silver tape just in case. I think its worth it for the...

Installing Kingspan/Celotex above the Crown Board

I think (I could be wrong as usual) that the foil is good in terms of UV stability. But any damage would let a little water ingress and it would slowly go wrong from there. But you are right that the foil is the weak spot. Its vulnerable to any mechanical damage, even putting a brick on top...

Installing Kingspan/Celotex above the Crown Board

I am inspired your idea, I am tempted to just make the whole roof out of insulation - job done. Just cut an oversized bit, put a little rim round the bottom, tape the exposed edges with silver tape and whalar one insulated roof (weighted down of course). Seems no need for all the extra wood...

    Relocating robbing bees?

R u sure? I think the outcome would depend partly on the intruders-defenders ratio. My assumption is that they would initially keep fighting. If there were few intruders than they would probably just be killed. Maybe if there were a lot of intrudes then some would survive the relocation then...

Identifying the climatic drivers of honey bee disease in England and Wales

No obviously we cannot all move around the globe with our bees to more favorable climat, but the other option is to obtain bees from a comparable climate. If it turns tropical, then you need tropical bees. If it gets freezing cold then get some Arctic bees. Another problem solved by Bobba........

Identifying the climatic drivers of honey bee disease in England and Wales

Typical me, but still not as good as when I used piratical instead of practical. So I am afraid JBM still has the award for spotting my most amusing gaff on this forum.
