    New brood chamber on top?

I think you managed to quote me but neglected to add your answer there :) To other respondents, thanks, very interesting. I am just a bit surprised, having seen on a number of occasions keepers saying “don’t just stick another box on top” because you might get something other than good honey...

    New brood chamber on top?

So, my understanding is that simply adding another box on-top of a hive (say it's a brood box) can yield a variety of results. The bees could ignore it, or they could start building comb upwards into it, or they could occupy it and fill it with brood... or even fill it with honey. My question...

    Question re Propolis

Very cool, thanks, I’ll search for it. Not that I am keen to have tar-collecting bees especially but it’s interesting behaviour.

    Question re Propolis

Wow… So I guess they will get whatever “resin” is available then… Just curious, do you happen to know whereabouts they are finding the bitumen?

    Question re Propolis

I guess it could well be that this is what drives their instincts: rough (which all tree interiors would be, naturally) requiring propolis to a bee, while other things don't. But, as the initial study suggested, they actually DO need it in a modern hive (smooth or otherwise) for the antiviral...

    Can bees manage themselves

THAT is a delightfully sneaky idea! Found a couple of youtube vids about it. And obviously if it's your favourite then it has had good results for you over time, I assume. Good to know. Adding it to my list of things to come-back-to later.

    Can bees manage themselves

I found this of interest There were some follow-up studies in progress, but I haven't been able to find out anything about them yet. Could still be running and unpublished.

    Can bees manage themselves

That being the case, would you say the entrance size (assuming a bottom entrance) is not very important for hive temperature?

    Do you have VSH Queens

Ok, I am WELL out of my wheelhouse commenting on this thread, but I saw some advice on the subject elsewhere that kinda sounded good, but I want to know what people think: It goes something like this, paraphrasing: ---- If you buy a VSH queen, your own colony and any outgoing swarms become...

    What's your favourite hole?

I'm just curious; I see a lot of bait-boxes with circular holes rather than a slot, although all-kinds are around. Is this purely because it's easy to make, or is there some thought that the scouts like it that way? Happy to also hear from anyone who has anything to say about the size, shape...

    Can bees manage themselves

You wanted a citation, you were provided with a good meta study of which there are countless more. Blustering and making accusations won’t change it, you are wrong and have proven so by the means you yourself asked for, while very obviously avoiding the actual point being made, presumably...

    Can bees manage themselves

I have lived most of my life on a farm with roughly 150 head of dairy cattle, and 200 of beef although pigs were the main one. For the sake of clarity, I am not myself a farmer. My academic background was in microbiology, specific to meat and fermentation. Modern dairy cows produce more milk...

    The post-swarm hive?

    ^Thanks, that's all much clearer.

    The post-swarm hive?

Hi all, There is lots of information out there about the lifecycle of bees, including the complexities of swarming. The abridged version as I understand it and as concerns wild bees in their natural state, is that once a hive begins to feel cramped then they will get ready to swarm. If the...

Hello everyone. My name is Jasper or Jay (either is fine with me) or just Bacon Wizard lol. Based in Shropshire. I am not a beekeeper :o I am here because I intend to absorb as much information as possible and comparing and contrasting different people's experiences before I get my first hive...
