1st scout bees at bait boxes

The Baitinator™ 3000 is getting attention, today. Anyone else seeing activity at the bait boxes?

Did I do the right thing?

Had time for a cursory inspection on Friday. The aforementioned colony that had filled the upturned poly feeder has only slightly drawn out a couple of frames of the super of foundation I added. Instead they have focused on filling the space between the lower shallow box and the new super with...

    Which bee?

This little fella/lady was hanging out next to my strongest colony, yesterday. Any idea which species it is?

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Looking great. Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone. I'll need to get used the width of the trailer. I'll be blocking traffic on these roads. Though thankfully the out apiary is only 1 mile away.

There's air in the tyres. Does that count?

My out apiary is on a hill. Thankfully, not too steep.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Not as much as it looks. It's mostly cedar beams I was given from a friend's gardening project, which are lightweight. The rest is pallet timber. I'd say 60% of the weight is the wood, the rest is the wheels. Riding with no load on the back, at normal speed, you barely notice the trailer is there.

Did I do the right thing?

My wife was on smoker duty. And she was up wind of the bees.

Did I do the right thing?

She is either a F1 of F2 2023 Buckfast, from BS Honey Queens. I inherited her from a retiring beekeeper. I don't buy queens, myself. Next hive is the same story. But I put a super on that one 2 weeks ago, which is now fully drawn and laid in. That Queen was part of a caught swarm. She had a...

Did I do the right thing?

@ericbeaumont This Friday, I'll have a look in the top deep, which I added on Saturday, to see what they've done with it - the neighbouring colony drew out a super I added 2 weeks ago. I'll also have a look under the bottom BB, without disturbing any frames, to see if there are any signs of...

Did I do the right thing?

The wild comb was all drone cells. The hive hefts heavy with stores and is packed with bees. Although I haven't done an inspection this year, due to the weather. I could have a look under the BB on Friday to see if there are swarm cells.

Did I do the right thing?

I'm prepped with all that's required for a Demaree, and keen to try it.

Did I do the right thing?

Yes. It's all gone. Seems they are a very high swarm risk.

Did I do the right thing?

I removed the QE 2 weeks ago. Immediately they built into the upturned feeder. My thinking on adding the new deep is that I'll use it to start the process of switching them to DBB.

Did I do the right thing?

1 x Super over 1 x BB, with QE and upturned polyfeeder on top. No additional feed provided over winter. Side note: realised part way into winter the super had been put on crossways to the BB. Switched into correct orientation. Despite my incompetence, they are doing this well.

Did I do the right thing?

Thanks for feedback. Some additional info: 2 weeks ago I added a super to the neighbouring colony as they were bursting out of the hive (brood and a half). Yesterday, all frames in that super were fully drawn. All that brace comb in the aforementioned hive was built in under 2 weeks, as it...

Did I do the right thing?

Some of my colonies have come out of winter firing on all cylinders. Upon inspection, one had built comb up into the upturned poly feeder. Every cell had an egg in it. I removed it all and plonked a deep of undrawn foundation on top.

I put all branches through my garden shredder.Once dried out, makes great smoker fuel.

The Langstroth wasn't invented until 1851, in the USA. So it's us who inherited your hive format, then decided to bugger it up with the frankenstein National format.
