Feeding bee's syrup for 3/5 days before varroa treatment ..

[/B] Thats rather a sweeping statement- would you like to elaborate, do you mean thin syrup or syrup in general ? im curious why you would say this as i have been feeding syrup to nucs and full colony's for years, when i want them to build wax/draw comb and expand the brood area.

Grumpy bees .. this time of the year

yes, a new queen, she has only been laying a few weeks a 5 frame nuc, 3 good frames of brood plenty, of room and food, im hoping i got to them in time, just proves you can never be 100 % sure what they will do

Grumpy bees .. this time of the year

yes i think so, the other day i found 2 sealed queen cells in one of my 5 framed nucs,i was quite surprised , as not really sure why they would be thinking of swarming, didnt find the queen as at the time i was looking to mark her, will look later today ,

    To split or not?

having only one hive is always a risk,i would certainly make increase so you have some insurance and more flexibility , you still have plenty of time to make splits and raise a few queens, you have many options, i personally use a snelgrove board, and that is what i will be doing later today as...

Hot, no flow, scarce water, discuss....

in the last couple of weeks here in Hampshire the flying activity of my own hives has drastically reduced, i conclude less forage available due to the dry weather , as i had split my 1 +1/2 hives into 6 and now have 4 newly laying queens, im concentrating on getting them to build comb and...

How long will a colony give a virgin queen to mate?

Finman , maybe my original reply should have been more detailed to avoid confusion, we are opening and disrupting the hive, not just moving them to the side the object is to help the OP to locate the queen in the troubled nuc, what i suggest is a simple way of bleeding off the flying bees...

How long will a colony give a virgin queen to mate?

for the last 35 years this method has worked well for me, it also helps if you pick a time of day when there are lots of flying bees, :facts:the fact is if you move a hive from its original position, within a few minutes all the flying bees and any returning from the field will return to that...

How long will a colony give a virgin queen to mate?

maybe you misunderstand me, this is only to clear enough bees from the nuc to make it easier to spot the queen, waiting an hour will clear enough flying bees from the nuc and make it less congested , after the inspection you then remove the spare box and replace the nuc in its original...

How long will a colony give a virgin queen to mate?

have you tried moving the nuc to one side away from its original position and put another in its place to collect the fliers, and then inspect it after an hour, that should make it easier to find the queen

    how often is too often

there are no set rules no set inspection times. its about what your bees are doing and the weather conditions and the time of year the best way to learn is to get involved either by inspecting your own hive or other keepers hives, you wont learn everything reading books, if you over inspect...

    Looking for a snelgrove expert.

i would stay with your first plan, you will learn a great deal using the Snelgrove board,i have always introduced the board under the top hive when i first make the split, no need to wait days,as long as there is good separation between top and bottom the bees know they need to make a new...
