    The right brood box setup?

Yes, I find it offers the ideal nest size for my bees.

    Queens

Depends on a load of different things, I've heard much generalising about performance tailing off, vibrant, young queens and such but I've always found some queens are good and some are not. We have some four year old queens who are out performing one year olds. Some who make no attempt to swarm...

    Supers and varroa treatments

In fairness Eric, my reply was to Dani and ordering with APC pure, you ordered from someone else, which is what I did after I received the email and arranged a refund. As I said before all I can do is say what I've seen and some suppliers are now applying restrictions.

    Supers and varroa treatments

Go back and order a kilo, don't cancel it and wait for the email confirming your order, that's when they want you to explain. You will receive a reply from Ellen explaining the new legislation brought in by the UK government on Oct 1st 2023. You can proceed with your order if you feel you meet...

    Supers and varroa treatments

AGWoodcare among others also quote the same new regulations, all I can do is say what I've seen. Times and attitudes are changing.

    Supers and varroa treatments

OA is covered by a law on poisonous substances, it's not available to individuals.

    Pursuit of AMM Black Bees

    Conservation is not racism.

    Pursuit of AMM Black Bees

I had the same comment when I used to take beginners at the association apiary. Also had people complaining about runny bees after they just pumped thick smoke throughout the hive, poor things were running around in panic.

    Heather predictions this year

I think we have a couple of varieties which flower at different times, hence why you will always find gorse in flower, somewhere.

Amm / Native Black Bee Discussion

The result of a queen rejected after she smeared her antennae with green paint. I found no sign of her and no brood a couple of weeks after I marked her and the 'incident' occurred and was contemplating turfing them out when I caught a glimpse of this little queen. Today she strolled into view...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

34 degrees at the farm today, must be summer. There were some colonies that needed checking for signs of a laying queen, which meant dragging five full supers off to get to the brood box which was fun. Brood present thankfully and a lot of nectar filled cells as well so an extra super added to...

    Pursuit of AMM Black Bees

I'd say it was based on law of probabilities.

Amm / Native Black Bee Discussion

That's why I always encourage others to do the same, infinitely more rewarding to raise your own queens and better still when working with a group.

Amm / Native Black Bee Discussion

I don't sell queens, most of the queens raised each year are distributed among local beekeepers who are part of a black bee group. Some are daughters of Amm queens and others are local black genetics and the majority go as virgins, I think it's much better that way.

What's flowering as forage in your area

Honey bees making the most of the last of the Veronicastrum.

    Bird Feet

Wrong colour, wrong talons. More likely a Blackbird.

    Virgins Vs cells

I use both methods, generally setting up nucs with cells and harvesting others to run the virgins into mating nucs made up as and when required. Success rate is on a par.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Well spotted, Emily. Easier to see here.

    Where are the wasps?

Yep, that was only part of my breakfast after a large bowl of porridge ;)
