    Accidental beekeeper in Sussex

Best not to take any yootoober advice as a beginner, when you gain experience you will know which ones to avoid. To carefully check the weight, heft it by lifting each side. Do this by catching hold of the floor.

    Accidental beekeeper in Sussex

Welcome to the forum. If the box is really that bad and considering they've been left alone this long, I would check the weight carefully and leave it at that. Chances are they have all the stores they need and everything will be well propolised so the last thing you want to do is test the...

    Hive Insulation

Life is too short and the bees are fine. I have Abelo poly roofs on some but I gave up on those too when they kept hiking the price.

All the hills around me are white, Clydach and Llanelly Hill is bound to be.

    Hive Insulation

My hives are all cedar hives, too many of them for kingspan or similar top insulation, it's too expensive and builders around here don't waste much of it. The bees do just fine.

If you remove the supers and stack them on the boards you won't have to worry either way.

Is beekeeping hard? And if so, why?

It also depends on how much or what else is going on in your life at the time.

We got what we deserved, you only have the thick Welsh to thank for that with their demand for born in Wales and can't speak English. Being born in Wales and unable to speak, never mind English, Edward's son fitted the criteria perfectly. Out smarted again

Best not to think of any 'F' grading.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Had a little wander around the hives, the bees were all very busy. Watched a handsome black drone walk out and dust himself down before flying off and I noticed another drone coming back to a daughter colony of this one. They were all hitting the Gorse today. Came home to find a lot of activity...

Getting the lids off Thorne's honey buckets

It's a sign of age, sadly. There once was a time when you'd rip them off with no thought, nowadays it's an achievement :D. Flip the handle to the front of the bucket and hold it. Grip the lid and pull up while pushing down on the handle.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Had jar of honey as a present from a beekeeper who had a couple of colonies off me in Spring this year, he was over the moon that they managed such a good harvest. I felt guilty taking it but he insisted and wants my opinion of his honey, it certainly looks good.
