    LimeWatch UK

The rain and the flowering of the lime trees in the park across the road have coincided perfectly.

    Porter bee escapes not working

I've got 8 way and rhombus escapes. Both work well. But at this time of year I leave porters in the holes in my wooden crown boards so that those who get caught above the board after an inspection can rejoin the colony.

    honey price update

I'm holding at £6 for 340g on the doorstep this year, but it'll be at least £7 in 2023. Shops that take my honey buy at £5 and sell at £8. They'll be paying £6 next year.

    new frames v old frames

I agree with the OP, with the proviso that the old wax is melted down and used for candles. Sell the candles and that goes some way to offsetting the cost of throwing out the frames. It's so much quicker and much more pleasant to put foundation in new frames.

Dead Hive, unknown cause images warning

Sadly your absence appears to have coincided with the June gap, when there is a break in available forage. If they've not got sufficient stores, they starve unless you're there to spot the problem and feed them.

    honey price update

Take a jar into a local shop and show it to the shopkeeper. Ask if he'd like to take a few jars on sale or return. Last year we had more honey than we could easily sell from the gate. My bee buddy spoke to the butcher he shopped at in Leeds market and to the owner of a deli in a village near one...

    varroa treatments

I followed Erichalfbee's link, clicked on "for instructions click here", scrolled down to the very bottom, in the box below questions about Apivar. "Do not recycle brood frames as honey frames". To me that seems a clear instruction not to extract honey from frames that have been exposed to Apivar.

    The Rose Hive Method Again....Yawn???

I put bees into my rose boxes in 2020. They overwintered well and expanded rapidly. In 2021 I put the hive in my garden apiary, alongside two others. It gave the most honey that year. I followed Tim's way and didn't feed over the winter of 21/22. They came through that winter stronger than the...

    varroa treatments

The problem with Apivar is that it leaves a residue in the foundation. If you want to do a demaree the following year you can't then take the honey the bees have stored in the upper chamber.

    Bees in a tree

Are you sure they're honey bees? Could they be tree bumbles?

    Mouldy Multicolour Comb!?

Why not work with the good friend you mention? When I went on a course twelve years ago I met someone who lived near me. He got bees, and put them in my garden. We worked them together, and have continued to to this as the number of hives and the number of apiaries has increased. It makes the...

    Angry bees!!!

I checked the hives in one of my out apiaries on Wednesday. They were all calm and pleasant to inspect. On Thursday morning I opened one of the hives in my garden, a normally pleasant hive, and the bees poured out at me. Later that day I went to the hive next to it and they were fine. The bees...

What's flowering as forage in your area

I have a huge pyracantha immediately beside the hives. The bees love it.

    Pound Jars or 12 oz

Look on your local supermarket shelves. The honey and jam is overwhelmingly in 340g jars. That seems to be what the customer prefers. One advantage I can see is that you can pitch them at a good price point.

Should I move hive with a newly hatched queen?

Our undertaker bees drop their burden on our patio. We've got a magpie that comes along and disposes of the corpses.

Why sell ten 10 frames with a box that can fit 11?

Give me a three wheeler Morgan any day.

Why sell ten 10 frames with a box that can fit 11?

Rose boxes take 12 Hoffman frames. Thornes sells rose frames and foundation in packs of 10, and also sells both as singles. Presumably they could instruct whoever does their packaging to go to 12 per pack. So why?
