    honey price update

Sold my first few jars, very exciting! Advertised on FB marketplace at £5/250g jar (Equivalent to £9.08/lb in old money).

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Avery L7173 labels (or knockoffs...) fit perfectly on 3 sides of an 8oz hex jar. Avery label designer on their website, colour laser printer. Job done :)

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Bramble, clover and lime have all been out in force, though coming to an end now. I would guess a blend of all 3 but who knows. Add in gardens and allotments... I'm going with generic multifloral honey!

And jarred. It's lovely and clear.

    Moving super frames

DN4 spacing is good to build up an initial stock of drawn comb (cram 12 frames in a super), but moving to wider spacing gives you fewer, fatter combs. Fewer frames to uncap and more honey overall (fewer seams of bees taking up honey space).

    Moving super frames

Yes, both moving them within a super, putting less developed frames towards the centre, and between supers, moving capped frames up. Then again I've only got a few hives and time to mess about with them.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Got impatient, pulled and extracted a super. 11.4kg, 18% moisture content, sitting in the settling tank to be jarred either tomorrow evening or over the weekend. Blew out 1 frame that wasn't flush against the extractor cage. That's now sat in the solar wax melter. Plenty more to come too, it's...

    drawing frames

But they need somewhere to store it, so they'll build comb if needed.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked up on them, mostly to see if they're still there... they are and the queen's laying. I assumed it was a cast due to the size of the swarm, barely 2 (14x12) seams of bees, but it seems a bit fast for a virgin to be mated and laying already. Perhaps It was a cast and they were bivouacked...

    Colony in felled tree.

I've not done a cutout, but I'd have thought empty frames and elastic bands to hold removed comb into the frames, rather than foundation.

    honey price update

I took it to be worse than that. I took it to be "only for cats and dogs, *wink wink, nudge nudge*" I really hope nobody falls for this crap and forgoes regular cancer treatment in favour of some overpriced honey.

What's flowering as forage in your area

Bramble's going over here, just got back from walking the dog and some of the berries are already darkening! Plenty of clover, lime and chestnut still out though, and lots of gardens around - bees are loving the lavender and coralberry in my front garden.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Blummin' bees absconded and are back on the corner of the shed this morning. Attempt #2, this time with a frame of BIAS in the box.
  14. W

What did you do in the Apiary today?

They were 99% on the box, very few left on the shed roof, so I lifted the box carefully down onto a table for ease of access. Scooped a bunch in using a takeaway tub, caught a brief glimpse of the (or a...) queen. Dark, unmarked. After that the rest went in.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

"Daaaad, there are lots of bees in the garden" Bollocks... Hasty check through my colonies, all queens still present. Phew. Stuck a nuc box on the roof and let them stroll in... hopefully Well I assume they'll go in... they're still largely clustered on the front.

    Porter bee escapes not working

What's the benefit of having it like that rather than a whole rhombus in the centre?

"The Alchemist" small solar wax melter

The thought has already crossed my mind. Although the grille inside is angled, the box and window itself aren't. I propped the back up on some scraps of wood to better catch the sun. A kingspan "nest" as you put it, with an integrated slope/angle set.

"The Alchemist" small solar wax melter

The small solar wax melter in Bee Equipment's new range caught my eye recently - The Alchemist Cheaper than others I'd looked at (Thorne and Abelo primarily) and being all stainless there's no need to worry about rust/rot so I took the plunge (BEECRAFT10 code helped ;)) A few of the edges are...
