Striving for racial purity in bees a pointless, counter productive, seriously bad idea?

These already exist I believe. They use them to catch drones for sperm donors.

    US "style" in the UK?

Do you find any difference in honey yield at all? Or do you do it purely for drawing comb?

    US "style" in the UK?

Thats interesting thanks. I'm tempted to try one colony and see how it goes. Not sure my bees are prolific enough though. Do you use a particular strain or local bees?

    US "style" in the UK?

Hi all, I watch a lot of beekeeping videos on you tube and I'm always interested in the seeming contrast between US and UK beekeeping methods. Not the migratory stuff but the way the hives are often configured. All boxes the same size and no QE. Splitting seems to be a lot of 'walk away'...

    Bees are very grumpy

Yeah. Mine were all pretty annoyed with me as well.

    Whats with this cold weather

I've taken the mid supers off. They were empty and untouched. No backfilling in the top box and bottom box was dry as well. So they didn't have a drop left.

    Whats with this cold weather

I'm happy to leave her for a bit. I'll go and put a feeder on top tomorrow and leave the fondant between the boxes that way they can take their choice I guess. Hopefully once this week's weather clears we will get a flow on and I can take it all off.

    Whats with this cold weather

Wait for her to start laying properly and if she did split her off into a nuc.

    Whats with this cold weather

Sorry wasn't clear. Original queen is in the bottom box. Virgin in the top. She's been out about a week if I recall

Wilko's also has them at a decent price.

    Whats with this cold weather

This is on a demareed hive though with a virgin queen in the top box. I've taken the super off as it was empty and placed a block of fondant in an eke between the two boxes. If I put a feeder on will the bees in the bottom box come all the way through and take syrup down to the bottom box or...

    Whats with this cold weather

Having to feed one of my hives today in Essex. Looked at them yesterday and there wasn't a drop of stores in the hive. Will put a fondant patty on as it's forecast miserable weather for the week.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked mine today. Dropped some empty frames down from the demaree into the brood box on two. One hive is just not building and I can see chalkbrood mummies on the floor so new queen needed there. Took the snelgrove colony down to two QC The last colony was completely dry of stores. Not a...

    Introducing virgin queens

Ok, so I set up a nuc in the same apiary with sealed brood and stores to start and let the foragers fly home, then move it to another apiary and introduce the virgin dunked in honey.

    Introducing virgin queens

Would a push in cage over sealed brood work for a virgin?

    Magpies on my mating nucs

Well so far the goal netting has stopped them. However if they work out how to get through it I'll build some mesh screens.

    Introducing virgin queens

I have five virgins on order for delivery in June. I was planning on using apideas but I'm now thinking of making some nucs and then hopefully they'll build up in time to overwinter.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Wow seems like a waste Hemo. I use them to make floors, crownboards and will also try some roofs this weekend. Much cheaper than buying them.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Three pallets done so far. A decent amount of timber salvaged.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Today I'll be mostly salvaging timber from these. Have an apiaries worth of floors, crown boards and roofs to build.
