My long suffering other half was chucking out an old ikea drawer unit. Unfortunately for her I spotted it before the bin men came.
Now on a test run to see if it will get up to temperature.
Spun out 10l of honey last night, the first from a new apiary this year.
I'm not sure what the bees have been on but they have produced a thick dark amber honey with a strong almost burnt bouquet. My official tasting team have decided that the honey tasted almost like caramel. It's very...
Hi all
I had a successful queen mating in a couple of mini nucs.
One nuc built out comb in the frames perfectly and I moved those bees and the queen to a poly nuc of drawn comb and she's laying away like a trooper.
The other managed to get the other side of the feeder excluder and I only...
Hi all.
I want to try grafting next year and I have a dartington hive that I don't plan to use for honey production.
I was wondering if I make a solid central divider and a divider with a Queen excluder the cloake method would work using the entrances on either side of the hive.
I thought...
Just wondering if anyone knows if this could be used for screen boards, travel screens etc or would the bees be able to chew through?

Little update on my dark queen's.
The mated queen is still building slower than the rest of the apiary she is in.
The three young queens in their first year at the other apiary all made swarm preps in their first year despite having space above them and one got away as I must have missed a...
Just as an update to this thread.
Of the five virgins I bought in four got mated and through the winter.
One has turned out to be very chalky so is due to be replaced.
The other three are very calm bees that are building pretty steadily.
The mated queen I got in towards the end of the...
Layed out the newest apiary today. Had a rugby club call and ask if I could help them out keeping bees. I said sure if I can keep some there as well.
They've built a nice fenced off area and I've been up helping them lay it out today. Will take bees up there tonight.
Finally got a chance to go through my main apiary today. Only one colony built up enough to require a super. Pulled two boxes of stores out and replaced with either comb, foundation or a starter strip.
One new queen found so marked her white. Everything else was in good shape so happy for the...
Still not gone in fully. Just checked for weight. Did lift the crown board on a couple. And moved a couple of empty frames from the outside to the edge of the brood.
It looks like I'll need to remove some frames of stores after the next bout of predicted cool weather.
Hi. I buy boxes although I'd like to start making them as well.
I make my floors crown boards and roofs for my apiaries.
This one was all got from thornes though.
My better half wants a hive at the bottom of the garden so I decided to ditch my usually practical approach to hive parts and make one look pretty for her.
Have converted an old screen floor to a tunnel entrance as well so no mucking about with mouse guards later.
I've yet to build a deep...
It's interesting you got a good flow; FF it last year. We got nothing from it last year due to the cold and there was only a very few berries for the birds over winter.
One of my new apiaries is surrounded by Holly. Last year May was a washout so i didn't get to see what the flow was like. So I was wondering if you guys know if Holly produces a regular flow, or is it a bit hit and miss like some other plants?
