    Early stage of an AFB?

Yes slime and its AFB. I would close the hive, wash your clothing, disinfect tools with 90% alcohol or higher. If you dont get help give me a shout and I can help you with the rest. I took very good advice from Finman a few years ago. I still get the odd infection. It actually isnt that...

    Early stage of an AFB?

I believe there is a new strain, I had someone round a few months ago with a frame for me to diagnose, worst case of AFB I have ever seen, didnt smell at all.

    Early stage of an AFB?

I'd say it was AFB as long as you havent mixed up the contents of the cell. It is usually darker however. No need for test kits or string tests, open up the perforated cell and look inside. Is it a dead bee, if so you are fine, if it is slime it is AFB. AFB doesnt always smell.

    Book collection for sale

John Bryan 6 May at 09:00 I am posting this with the permission of Kev and Shirley. My father is 86 and has finally given up beekeeping and is moving to accommodation better suited to his current needs. Apart from all his practical beekeeping gear we also have over 40 years worth of beekeeping...

    Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus

I've read it in Brother Adam's books, I believe it was why he was so interested in Ligustica

    Maximum number of colonies...

Stretching yourself to maximum is what you are wanting to do, this is the easy part, what you aren't factoring in is when it goes wrong. You did mention swarming and to be honest that is the lowest on my list, as you get bigger then so does the probability of problems and these take the time.

    Sublimox o ring size

I dont use them, so much easier without and you lose so little vapour once they warm up.

    Stolen hives

Hi, sorry I don't in the UK. There is a company here called Prosegur in Portugal which have found a niche in the market for beekeepers, they supply a camera which remotely calls you and the Police for €500 and a monthly payment. Theft is a huge problem in Portugal as are fires, asian hornets...

    Stolen hives

There are many options for trackers, I have a classic car that I recently put a good tracker on but they are not cheap. They need a battery, ideally a charger, access to internet and mobile phone network. They also need concealed, as mentioned above thieves probably swap boxes and burn the...

    Frame/Foundation Wire

I have to say I haven't ever seen my wires rust, I even leave them out in the rain and nothing, must be like stainless, different qualities. I dont use eyelets either and get no problems with 0.6mm

    Frame/Foundation Wire

Have you tried galvanised? I cant find any differerence between galvanised or stainless, does it rust eventually? I'm aware stainless will outlive the wood but when the last lot I bought cost €20 for 25kg it makes frames very cheap at €0.12c each to make.

    Frame/Foundation Wire

I've seen it in most beekeeping supply places. 0.6 mm galvanised is what I use, I dont see any reason to go stainless and is cheaper. Sorry Poly Hive, just re read your reply, I'm sure you would do a good deal ;-)

No queen cells, yet there was the swarm!

They also take off when loaded with varroa

    Shook swarm frames

Shook swarm, bailey comb change, what a complete waste, comb gets migrated to the end of the hive, surely at some point during the season gets light with honey and removed.

    Bee poop on neighbours cars.

It amazes me sometimes when I see the defensive replies. In PT there is a rule and I actually think it is a good one, no beehive less than 100 metres from any house, walkway or road, not only good for people being stung and could be allergic but for this case too. How would some of you feel if...

    Hive inspections

I saw someone who inseminates queens in the north of Scotland doing a full inspection with pics on Facebook yesterday, I had assumed Spring had started. I did my first grafting yesterday, late this year.

    How's Your Winter going?

We have a full on Eucalyptus flow. Strange to manage with cold nights, slightly too much space and the hive retracts, too little and the queen is under pressure.

    Buckfast Abbey

Yes that was the story I got told about the AFB and hiding terramycin from the authorities, having hives taken off him and burned. I thought that was off on two counts, AFB in the UK isnt as I imagine it is in the US and certainly in Portugal, its like having bubonic plague, then of course...
