How many jars of honey in a year?

If you have healthy bees honey is a byproduct. I treat in a minimal way and normally only use OAV. 1 treatment last year during a brood break in September. I don't keep anything that could be classed as native or near native though as I personally think they are crap bees. Get over it I don't...

    Poly Hive Prices

Done the same but any holes in the foil and the bees are through it in an instant. So wasps will do the same. Looked at composite material wood faced but it is expensive. Ply looks favourite but I want to overwinter 30 nucs to sell and the insulation of poly's gives them an edge. 3 frame wooden...

How many jars of honey in a year?

Too may variables to be accurate. Average published in the BBKA news was about 35lbs per hive. Average for bee farmers is about 150 lbs per colony, I know people that have had 175 lbs per colony for several years. Picture from last year. Not a great season from all accounts. Second pic the...

    BBKA Insurance withdrawn

I've never worked out why you cannot opt out of BDI completely. If you pay the minimum and have more than 3 hives your not covered so why do you have to pay it ? Your paying for something that you can never use.

    Extrafloral Nectaries

I don't know of any research trying to calculate a direct return from Extra floral nectaries but spending 5 minutes looking on google there seems a lot of research into insect interaction with them and a lot more plants with them than I thought. A lot are tropical plants though. Sugar content...

    Apiary died over winter

In a dip by a pond is a bad place to put bees. The pond creates fog, the dip creates frost a pocket. Damp will ruin the bees chance of survival. I have an apiary the same and I don't overwinter bees there for this reason. You'll find loads of dead bees on the floor of the hive where they have...

Splitting your first hive - how soon and how?

Advocating the use of 48 hour old larvae in grafting. These make poor quality queens. He did this on a webinar a week ago. He was indeed on the board of the BBKA for 8-9 years, He was part of the management that sold out to pesticide giants and did nothing to change the BBKA. He was refused...

Splitting your first hive - how soon and how?

Why ? His book is crap. His opinions based on his own ideas and all he does is ridicule others. Original thinker he isn't he hasn't the intelligence. Slags the BBKA off but spent 9 years on the board and achieved nowt. Slags bee inspectors off but has never been one. Slags everyone off who wrote...
