    Never had colonys like it.

Lucky you here in Surrey we have had no spring flow, no real summer flow and have hives post the flow that if are not fed would be considered starving.

How late in the year can you combine colonies?

I have combined as late as september, to be honest i don't see an issue as long as there are stores and the weather is warm enough so they are not clustering.

    Slow to cap honey

Lucky you here in Surrey talking to quite a few beekeepers we had no spring flow and have no real summer flow to date, with nearly 10 honey producing colonies i reckon lucky if i have 50lbs of honey between them.

    Price of honey

I get £4 for a 8oz hex, retails at £5.50, will probably try and push the price up this year to £4.50 wholesale. From the door i get normally £5 a jar. Key here is marketing, in the same village opposite someone sells their honey called County X Honey at £7 a lb retail. I call mine Village Y...

    Label suppliers -

The law also says that if anything is added to honey it cannot be called honey. But we often see labels stating, Honey with Royal Jelly, Honey with Nuts etc. Legally as something has been added to the honey it cannot be called honey.

    NBU Notice

Pretty certain i know who you mean. He also does mine as I have an advanced sentinel apiary so get three inspections a year. I look at it as a free disease training course. We did about 6 hours and three apiaries and circa 18 colonies, but found a queen in a nuc i had not been able to find...

    Label suppliers -

Raw is not a defined term to use with honey. Trading standards, may, take issue with it. Raw is defined by DEFRA as uncooked. As Honey cannot be cooked - it can be pasteurized - their is an argument to say that it cannot be described as raw. Trading Standards in each area make their own...

    Cut comb.

sorry yes, a Good frame gives me 5 blocks, medium one 4. so yes at £7 a block that is £35 and £28. Given 3 pounds of honey to a frame, i sell at £8 a lb that gives £24. So at 5 blocks it is definitely worth it.

I print at home using Design & Print Template Software | Avery save a fortune and can print off what i need when i need it. Might not be as flash but far more flexible.

    Cut comb.

I do quite a lot of cut comb, although selling it is through markets not through my usual outlet. I can on a good comb get 5 cut comb out of one frame, say £7 a pack that is £35 given a super has 3 of honey in it then I get £24 for it so a reasonable uplift in margin and profit and no jar...

Bees won’t vacate super - again....

Remember supers give bees space as well as a place for nectar. Whenever I look to take a supers off I always put directly under it either an empty i.e. no frames/foundation brood box or super. Otherwise the bees can become too crowded below. As someone said with canadian systems and others if...

EFB locally. Should it be more widely known?

Email your local SBI and they will sort it.

    Apiary density with 10km

What a wonderful deserted area you live in:) For my three apiaries i have the following densities reported on Bee Base: 430 432 442 The last one is my isolation/swarm Apiary! Too many beekeepers here in Surrey.

EFB locally. Should it be more widely known?

Of course the key lecsons are you need to make sure you pay for extra BDI insurance. Also as long as you are registered on Bee Base you receive automatic notifications when EFB is found within a certain area of your Apiary. Two years ago i had EFB literally hundreds of metres from one of my...

    Clip or not clip?

If you are retired, have unlimited time or keep bees where you can inspect regularly anytime the weather is good I think it is hard to justify. If you work, are time restricted, have out apiaries I think not only is it a good idea it could be argued is actually responsible in that you will...
