Oxalic acid Vapouriser using a car battery charger

I ended up getting well educated on this topic by an expert. If you think of a normal car battery that is continually charged from the alternator that is not what we need. i.e. We need a battery that holds a charge, is used up and then recharged. I had not heard of mobility scooter batteries...

    Hire an extractor

1 Join your local BKA division, 2 Many of them have extractors for hire, some electric, some manual some both. But they can be in high demand but the charge is normally minimal circa £10

    Beevac

Yes see attached i wrote for BeeCraft on how to make one. We have mine and another in the division. Mine uses an old dyson, the other a DeWalt battery hoover with fishing poles to enable 30ft+reach for tall trees.

    Adding honey supers ad infinitum

If bees come bearing presents rarely fighting in my view. Either at the entrance i.e. take away a box and leave bees to go to nearby hives or putting a super on. I have some tall stacks that i will clear by clearing top boxes/moving to lower hives before taking all off in one go.

    Oz armour?

I use Sherrif Bee Pro, expensive but 100% effective. The Sherriff and BB Wear as reported elsewhere are probably the best. Sherriff guarantee their zips for fives year i think and have the clear view veil which does make a difference when trying to see eggs

    Prime swarm

If you want to short cut, take a frame, or a section of eggs from another colony and drop in. If they start making queen cells you know it is queenless. Sort of an Acid Test, do it all the time when not sure.

    One handed queen catcher

I use them all the time, is their a risk yes, you have to be careful when closing to ensure queen is not caught. However they work very well as if you get the queen lined up parrallel then her wing will also often pop up and it is easy to clip. The key i learnt from another beekkeeper is how...

Selling honey through a village shop

I agree with most posts i sell my half poud jars at £5 and it retails at £7.50 Now onto the nasty stuff, TAX. HMRC all you to earn £1,000 gross as a side hustle, so at £5 a jar that is 200 jars not a lot, 100lbs of honey. After that you need to decide do you put it into a Ltd company or...

Is it time to remove Entrance Block

Funnily enough the only time i remove entrance blocks totally is in the winter, mouse guard on as you do not want dead bees blocking the entrance. Now i do sometimes put a second entrance in below the supers using a combined QE/Entrance but that is different and only on really strong colonies.

    Defensive Colony

Sorry even the late Jon Hamer who never wore a veil or gloves always donned a veil when dealing with other people's bees. You never know what you are going to get. Why take the risk.

Tricks to getting cool smoke from a smoker

If you want cool smoke use whatever you want to light and fuel the smoker, just grab a handful of grass roll it into a ball and place in lid, you will get cool smoke for about 2 hrs. Then replace. Taught on an NBU course i did and very effective.
