What did you do in the Apiary today?

Sweating and more sweating. Clearer boards in place in one apiary, new queens popping out of everywhere and the Clover and bramble starting to show up 10 days early. Could do with a couple days of rain to get it started! Went to remove some full supers over a clearer board but all the bees were...

Apidea misuse / banking virgin queens

I have one of these which didn't come with a plastic cover allowing the queen to go into the feeder section. I have added a small sheet of plastic (freezer zip bag) as a crown board with the lid over. It stops the queen going through.

Volume of soapy water necessary to terminate a colony?

Not that I intend to terminate any colony but I was wondering if burning sulphur also work for this or if it's too long to take effect?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Added more supers on most hives, they are going crazy on the hawthorn which is in full bloom with the weather!! Made more splits, first round of queens are mating this week, I have another round in the cell builder for requeening a few hives and a few more lovely queens coming through the...

    I’m annoyed!

Go back to the WBC hives, kill any queen or Qcs and introduce your own Qcs...they will never notice!!

How to take off winter stores

I guess its all a matter of perspective and it depends what you want to get out of your bees? probably not honey though 🤣

How to take off winter stores

I have had to demaree 2 dble brood already. My weakest hive is on 8 frames I think. A hive on 4 frames of bias at this time of the year would be requeened or united asap.

Swarms not as plentiful this year

So did I but they have all gone now 🤣...got plenty of supers though as they haven't been able to bring much up until last weekend. I have planned to increase as I expected to get hold of a new site from a water company but legal are taking so long it is unlikely for me to get it before 2055. In...

Swarms not as plentiful this year

Agreed. I have resisted the urge of placing bait hives and responding to swarm collection calls!

And off we go for 23

I had 14/18 take, 12 emerged but interestingly lost 2 virgins added to a demaree top box. Cells were gaged on day 12, they both emerged but nowhere to be seen so I assume they have been killed by the bees. As they usually draw cells in the top box I would have expected these to be accepted.

Can you recommend a good beekeeping YouTube channel?

One man's rubbish is another's treasure....Youtube can be a good income generator, regardless of what you post!!

Apidea, wax starter strip or full length?

This is the first time I have used apideas and like in my homemade mating nucs, I have used starter strips of roughly an inch. Today I was checking for emergence of queens but could not get the cell holders off as they had started building comb around the queencells and it was perpendicular to...

3 weeks away & all hell broken loose!

Ooof, not what you want to come back to! Hope you sort it out.

Swarm trap etiquette have I been good or bad?

I think it's a fair response for the cheek of putting the bait hive there The only thing you have to hope for is for the beek to be able to manage and requeen before they swarm and settle in the vicinity spreading those genes!

demarree for the second time of the season?

Yes but at this rate I will have 40 hives by July 🤣🤣

demarree for the second time of the season?

Same here, over 70% of my hives were Demaree last week and the week before and looking to do a few splits next week with my first batch of Qcs. No point keeping hives at full strength through May as the spring crop is almost out of the window with this weather.

demarree for the second time of the season?

Thanks @Curly green finger's for putting it up. Wouldn't call this a demaree either, it's just a way of ensuring the queen has enough space to lay and having the Qx in between makes for easier manipulations and inspections. @Erichalfbee , yes I use the Qx in between 2 BB for when I want to...
