    Bald brood advice/ thoughts please

I'm in Devon and have a colony which was very strong in the summer, in August I noticed patches of bald brood which didn't seem to align to a diagnosis of wax moth (not linear and the pattern was dotted over the face of the comb). There was also a small amount of sac brood. The local bee...

    Beekeeping reflections

I have just switched from nationals to commercials, in my third year of beekeeping. Thank the lord for the Thornes sale, commercial boxes just £15 each, new frames needed anyway as would have been doing a bailey comb change this year. Sticking with national supers and all the floors...

Melting old wax in a Thornes warming cabinet

I have used a warming cabinet to render brood frames, but you can't get many in before the bucket is full... I now render them in an old brood box, covered top and bottom with plywood and a hole in the top for a wallpaper steamer (obviously cut a little spout in the bottom ply). Much more...

    Card readers

For my regulars I take payment by bank transfer. That has been new with covid and works really well for me with no costs involved? Might be an option worth considering?

I have noticed a lot of references to shaking out bees on the forum and as arelatively new beek I am interested to know why they are shaken out rather than doing, say, a paper unite?

    Steam wax melter?

I used an old redundant brood box, thick ply top and bottom cut to size, hole in the top for the steamer nozzle and a small cut out in the front of the bottom ply board to let the wax out. All the brood jackets stayed in the box so perfect for a first filter... I'm sure there are much better...

Bees more agitated in recent weeks

Are they getting hangry? Some of my colonies have run out of stores and started to get agitated. Plenty of feed added and harmony restored...?

    unhatched brood becoming uncapped

No need to do anything re. the wax moth, the bees will sort it out. Putting the frame in the freezer would kill all the brood in the frame too. The brood in the affected cells will continue to develop normally if left alone. Use the freezer to kill wax mouth larvae on EMPTY frames before...

    unhatched brood becoming uncapped

Looks like bald brood, if it's only in small patches it's likely caused by wax moth larvae. The brood continues to develop normally. I've had this a few times. Just keep an eye on the unsealed brood for any other signs of disease?

Has anyone got a photo of a varroa-tray containing some of the critters?

Here's a photo of a high varroa load. Top tip: if possible, tilt the board and the sunlight reflects off varroa making them easier to spot 🙂

    Wasp Out

Hmm, I bought these last year to try and had no success at all. The wasps very quickly worked out how to get in the sides of the trunking 😟

    Replacement extractor perspex lid

I've recently had to replace two, one of my own which a friend broke when borrowing it, and one for our branch apiary. I took the unbroken half for each extractor to a local plastics company and they cut me two new pieces to shape for £30.
