    Gasvap competitor.

It looks like a refined version of the GasVap at €178 v's £99.50. If I was feeling flush I'd be sorely temped to get an InstantVap however, that's even more at €359...

    Asian Hornets

I'm about to start the catch, dose with fipronil mixture and release strategy. I popped by my hives half an hour ago and in less than 15 minutes killed 65 Asian Hornets. It's far worse for me than last year in spite of trapping in early spring. Here, the worst month are October / November, so...

    Mistakes

I'll share my similar total failure story too..... some weeks ago one of my queens was in the process of being superseded (she'd been a bit dodgy for some time). This was the second time supersedure seemed to be started, but the first time they ripped down the queen cell. I checked all the...

Combining 2 hives in the same apiary

I'd like to combine 2 of my colonies, however, I'm uncertain as to what happens after they've 'combined'.... Let's say hive A gets put on top of Hive B with newspaper between. Once they've munched through the paper will a significant proportion of those from Hive A simply return to their...

Extra queen cell in split nuc!

To summarise : * July 1st: Nuc created using open queen cell. * Queen should have emerged say 10 days later (guessing, but as the cell wasn't capped, then >8 days). So c. July 11th. * today is the 29th, 18 days after possible emergence. Like Drex, I've had it take 3 weeks (& more) sometimes...

Replacing a queen - how much time to leave between removing old queen and inserting new queen?

All done. Old queen 'removed' & 10 minutes later new one in place in a cage, tab off. They seemed very receptive to her straight off, so no reason to believe there will be any issues. Will check in a few days. Thanks everyone.

Replacing a queen - how much time to leave between removing old queen and inserting new queen?

And would you put the new queen in a cage, or just introduce her & keep your fingers crossed?

Replacing a queen - how much time to leave between removing old queen and inserting new queen?

I have an under performing 2022 queen which I plan to replace with a recently (< 7 days) mated queen from a mini mating nuc. From the point of squishing the old queen, how long should I leave it before putting the new one in, presumably in a cage with fondant? From what I've read, I should leave...

    Supersedure - 2 cells

I'm possibly being lazy, but nucing the queen will result in loads of queen cells which I'll have to knock down. Right now life seems easy with just 2! Aside from the stress of the clipping, that's why hemo's solution above appeals!

    Supersedure - 2 cells

Although nervous as I've never clipped wings before, I do like your solution. The possible swarming is what's bugging me, either thru the existing queen, or one of the 2 cells. Nice solution - thanks.

    Supersedure - 2 cells

A week or 2 ago I started thinking that the laying pattern of one of my queens wasn't great or particularly vigorous. Two days ago in opening it up to take a frame of stores for another nuc I was making up I noticed 2 large, but still open queen cells. My assumption is that the queen is being...

Removing Posca pen paint from metal lids

This season I've taken to noting key things directly on the metal hive lid using last years Posca pen. Having just moved a nuc into a hive, I now need to remove said paint. A quick google tells me I could use hand sanitiser, water, or a razor blade....I know a simple wash won't work, maybe I...

    Hello from Southern France.

Hi Carl - in my experience there is very little Asian Hornet activity at this time of year. Nests are being established and so it's early days. Come July I start to see increasing numbers (I've caught some this year - possibly just the fondatrices / queens) with it getting quite bad come...

Backfilling the brood nest / box

By way of an update, from a quick look today, since removing the queen excluders one of the two have indeed moved up into the super and appear to have moved stores up. Certainly there's been a run on egg laying over the last few days. So a big thanks to Erichalfbee, Newbeeneil & E&MBees for...

    1st Split Attempt

The OP is using Dadant hives which are already pretty big as a single brood box. A double brood Dadant is going to be a monster of a hive & not something I've ever seen here in France where they're extensively used. As I understand it, yes it can happen, but only in extreme circumstances (...&...

Any scouts at your swarm trap?

Looking very hopeful there - not so much as a sniff my way. You do have a certain reputation for catching multiple swarms each year to keep up!
