    Bespoke label for retailer

Will they pay for the whole batch of labels upfront?

    Honey colour and extraction?

Yes, you're right the different colours might be due to different floral sources. Additionally the paler cappings may be where the honey has granulated. And/or the darker region may be where there was previously brood. Brood frames full of stores can be just as useful as empty drawn comb. I'd...

    Bait hive etiquette

I see bait hives as more of a facility than a temptation. AFAIK, the presence of a bait hive (or any other suitable swarm destination) doesn't induce swarming. I'd far rather a swarm from one of my hives ended up in a bait hive than in a chimney or under somebodies eaves. Additionally, if your...

    HACCP examples

Google 'haccp honey' - shires vineyard is the result you want and the word doc linked within. I'm fairly sure the EHO who inspected me in 2020 brought this is an example. Luckily I had already seen it and amended it for my premises.

Austrian Bees article in New York Times

Interesting article with some relevance to advocates for keeping pure lines of bees. Online link to article here as well https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/04/world/europe/austria-bees-carinthia-carniolan.html

    Abelo steam wax melter

I also have an older version of the Abelo boiler. I'd fully recommend a gas burner version as the smoke from burning wood is a pain. When I have wanted to clean up frames I cut out the wax and put it into the steam melter and clean up the frames in a boiling washing soda solution. Any...

    Abelo steam wax melter

I have one and find it useful, especially for cappings. I do put some frames through but iirc only <15 max fit in so if you have a large number it takes a long time. At 50 pence per frame, the cost of electricity and a need for kindling for the woodburner, it can seem an unnecessary faff.

    Honey on holiday

I'm sure I've read that what is now called a butter dish was originally used for (comb?) honey.

    Honey on holiday

I definitely get dandelion, the orchards where I have a couple of apiaries are covered in dandelions in the spring. But if the main flowering is before early to mid April my colonies aren't strong enough to get a majority crop from it.

    Honey on holiday

The tarassaco is the dandelion. Having had the monofloral, I'm fairly sure that my spring crop can have dandelion, it seems to be more dominant when we have a later spring and little OSR available locally.

    Honey on holiday

There's a post today on the shop's Instagram account of cutting up the honey with what looks like a cheese wire. I don't know how they get round honey being hygroscopic and on open display - I'd be concerned about the block absorbing moisture and inquisitive fingers. I'm off to the Alps...

    Marmalade

Will be interested to hear how it turns out., I've never tried using honey in a fresh seville recipe. My last batch of marmalade was made in late November with frozen sevilles and a grapefruit and was inferior to my normal recipe with a lemon. I picked up some sevilles yesterday (£2.50 per kg...

    Marmalade

I tried following David Evans's advice here https://theapiarist.org/tag/marmalade/ but I didn't enjoy the result but that could well have been due to user error. I normally follow Dan Lepard's recipe which IIRC is 1:2:2 fruit:sugar:water. Using David Evans's rule of thumb that 5lb honey is 4lb...
