    What defines a healthy colony

Also transferring across from human health, there's the concept of good health being more than the absence of physical disease. Are the following healthy? Drone laying queen, wax moth or mice in residence, no stores, no pollen? I think colony viability (over what time frame?) is also part of...

    Honey weighing machines

Swienty did an online sales talk about their filling machines 3-4 years ago and were asked about cheaper alternatives. They were very dismissive about the quality and longevity of the internal components. It wasn't clear whether they had in mind European or Chinese alternatives and I get that...

    Your streamlining tips?

I think it was a talk in ~2008. The general ethos of his approach rather than the specifics are what to me is the take home message.

    Your streamlining tips?

At least he didn't mention matchsticks. Here is the link to the David Wainwright video

    Your streamlining tips?

A couple of things to pass on: Notes from a talk by Andy Wattam, former National Bee Inspector, titled 20 Minute beekeeper. http://www.hertsbees.org.uk/tips/bee-management/20-minute-beekeeper/ David Wainwright's interview by Gweyn Gruffyd's (think I might have butchered the spelling), recently...

Broken honey gate for SAF Natura 9 frame radial extractor

Lyson appear to have bought/merged with Saf natura so Abelo may be the ones to contact in the future.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

That's reassuring after removing apivar strips today and finding the odd broodless colony. Although one colony did have some empty QC's so there may have been some late supersedure shenanigans. Minimal feeding required, most hives were pleasingly heavy.

    Jar Prices 2024.

Going direct to Rawlins was approx £200 cheaper than BFA sales for 20 x boxes round 340g jars ordered at the end of July. Works out at ~62 pence per jar, including lid.

Is he still active as a beefarmer?

    Honey extraction services

That's good of you. David Stott (Tomlow bees) used to offer an extraction service, based near Warwick. I don't know if he still does. He was charging £5 per super I'm sure I've seen social media posts from a beefarmer based in Staffordshire who offered extraction services but a quick google...

    Honey extraction services

100 supers is several days work, at least it would be for me. It's a ton of honey minimum. Enrico is spot on.

God I love growing our own

My autumn raspberries (polka) have suffered from the wet winter, indifferent spring weather and then the dry cloudy summer. As have most of the other fruit and veg in the garden apart from apples. I've had a couple of blight free years growing a couple of the Crimson tomato varieties, yield...

    Nail gun recommendations

My 10 year old Tacwise 191 has jammed once too often and needs replacing. I have a few hundred frames to make over the winter and I don't have or want to get a compressor. A quick search here suggests the Screwfix titan is good, they have two models available, one at £29.99 and one at £34.99 -...

God I love growing our own

I know it's up to me when I pick my apples but is there any contemporary harvesting date info that reflect the changes in climate? Looking up some for the varieties that I grow (Kidds Orange red, Charles Ross, Sunset, Blenheim Orange amongst others) they all suggest harvest dates that are at...

    Paynes Poly nuc feeders leaking

Probably the cheapest in B&Q or the one where I had some left over from decorating. So long as the paint isn't tacky I'd be happy to use it. I often use thymolated syrup so I'm not too concerned about paint fumes, I don't think the bees are bothered either.

    Paynes Poly nuc feeders leaking

Have you painted inside the feeder? It's not clear whether you have. I paint mine with gloss paint and haven't had any issues.

    APIVAR.

Are there any mites to knock down? Remember absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Broken honey gate for SAF Natura 9 frame radial extractor

Ring Thornes, they may be able to help. They were very helpful when I replaced a honey gate on an old Thomas stainless tank.

    Sublimox

Try it with water, it will be obvious if the seal is not good enough. Mine are loose when cold but fine once the body of the sublimox is heated up and in use. As Erichalfbee notes, it is worth looking at replacing the o rings. Search on here as it's been discussed in the past.
