    Summer Shows

I received notification yesterday of the Festival of Bees that will be held around the country this July. Suffering from lack of stimulation, normally provided by the BeeTradex and a trip to Harper Adams I looked at the list of of exhibitors for the show at the Bath and West showground and was...

    Divided brood boxes

I was intrigued by B&S honey bee brood boxes and the built in splitter. Having read a book by leming B. Thorsen -'An efficient Production of Bee Colonies', I was all set to purchase several. Unfortunately they are sold out at present. Does anyone know of a supplier of a comparible product?

    Foxes visiting the garden

I believe it is illegal to move foxes in the K. Like grey squirrels they are vermin. The laws apply equally to the RSPCA and animal rescue places. Tiggywinkles the wildlife hospital in out village have been quietly warned about releasing foxes.

Striving for racial purity in bees a pointless, counter productive, seriously bad idea?

I agree with B+ regarding Geds apiaries. I live even nearer and as local swarm officer for a number of years I have dealt with swarms from feral colonies near his apiaries. He cannot control the supply of drones in the local DCAs and 2nd/3rd/etc generation Buckfasts can have undesired effects on...

Queen discs - that glow in the dark!

I know these disks are available from a German supplier. Does anyone know of a supplier other than T****s? I cannot recall the name of the German company and T*****s are very expensive.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked all the hives for the TherapBee Project on Saturday along with 2 outlying apiaries. Today, Sunday checked the rest of my hives. All doing well. One hive absolutely bursting at the seams. I have never seen so many bees in a hive in April. They are in a 14x12 but I think I hade better go...

    Wild pollinators out-gunned by honeybees

Honey bees out competing other pollinators is not a good arguement. Most pollinators have differing adaptations for forageing. For instance honey bees do not have a long enough tongue to feed on some varieties of beans. Some insects are plant specific. With a mix of forage plants there is enogh...

    Forage Range

Thanks Martin that is good to know. The talk was about the lack of forage, particularly in Central London, and the speaker gave this example from his own experience. was not sure if he meant 4 miles each way but was suprised at the time at the distance quoted.
