When you think you are on top of things (update)

New hive had the Q on the frame of brood she was on, 2 empty frames of drawn comb and stores. The rest was new foundation.

When you think you are on top of things (update)

I've had a very eventful/stressful start to the season starting mid april. Had a hive that was absolutely bouncing/noisy/bursting with bees so I just knew it was going to swarm. 1st inspection, sealed QC found so I performed a Pagdens split that went like a dream..........until about 2hours...

    Does queen size matter?

I'm not sure if shes mated yet. The weather hasn't been great so maybe not. I'll have another look in a week or so.

    Does queen size matter?

Inspected a colony today with a new queen. She is quite small compared queens I've seen before. She is only 10 days old and hasn't started laying yet. Will her size have any bearing on how good she will be?

    Absconding swarm

It was a swarm from 1 of my other hives so it was either the emerging queen or 1 that was a week old. I left the QE under for 48hrs and fed after that. They only took about half a pint and no effort to build any comb.

    Absconding swarm

I rehomed a swarm a week ago into a nice clean national hive with a frame of stores, some drawn comb and fresh foundation. Put a shallow feeder on top which they found and were taking down. Checked the food this morning to find the hive empty. Weather was pretty poor last week so not much...

    Queen advice following split

So I split a packed hive a week ago leaving just a sealed QC in the original hive(or so I thought) checked it again today to see if any more had been made and found 5 more so selected the best looking 1 and removed the rest only to find after a few minutes of being removed the original QC I'd...

    Best National Hive

I took a punt on a Thorne cedar national off ebay for £109. omf brood 2x supers roof qx and crown board entrance block & 8 steel runners. Machining and the quality of timber was spot on. Dead straight, no warping. Really impressed. Maybe i was just lucky though.

    Ebay foundation.

Spotted some Dadant super foundation on Ebay at £9 delivered. Seems too cheap to be any good, probably from China. Has anyone ever tried it? Think its from Easipet.

    Sealing a new cedar hive

Ive just bought a new cedar hive from Thornes. Its their budget range but on 1st inspection im very impressed with the quality. What is the best way to seal it once I've put it together. I was thinking linseed or tung oil, or is there anything else? I want to keep the wooden look so no paint...

    Switching hive types

The problem is I'm unable to split the colony as all my other equipment is National and Dadant frames wont fit. The only space i can give them is an empty super of foundation. Hence the idea of being able to add a National brood on top. Is there anything else I could try? Ideally all my kit...

    Switching hive types

Ive been thinking about this recently.. I have a Dadant hive that I struggle to stop swarming. My other hives are National so the size difference is a problem. My thought was to make an adapter so I could put a National brood onto the Dadant brood to create more space during swarm season and...

    What are their chances?

Could you just remove the section of trunk to the side of the bridleway, preferably out of sight, and cover them as best as you can to give them some protection?

    Bee Equipment quality?

Was looking at getting a few spare bits ready for spring. Are their hive parts and frames any good?

    Queen leaving the hive!

So i've just been sitting infront of my weakest colony watching the few comings and goings when the queen emerged. She walked forward and a worker scrambled on her back for a few seconds then she was off. A few seconds around the entrance then off up to about 10 feet. A few more seconds flying...

Why are Nationals so popular? (and other advice appreciated)

Modified Dadant anyone? I bought 1 as my 1st hive full of bees and 2 full supers. That was bloody heavy and a single full super is a struggle.....i now have 2 nationals aswell!
