    Are you still inspecting? November?

Will be going in to remove the Apivar strips next week. I’ve always done the full 10 week treatment so they went in at the beginning of September when the supers came off. Will be doing the OAV at the same time as the hole is in the deep side of my reversible crown board.

    Air source heat pumps

Not sure if you can draw direct comparisons with a gas boiler underfloor heating system. Our water temp is set at 40C. Takes 12 hr for the house to get upto room thermostats temp of 20C when starting from around 10C. Due to the 24mm stone floor laid on a screed base it can store a lot of heat...

    Syrup “honey”

Stores get mixed up as they come into the hive & get moved around. Sugar syrup can get mixed with honey either stored or foraged that’s why yours tasted of honey. If there’s no mixing then it won’t taste of honey.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Big rise in hive weights over the past 10 days with all now upto winter weight. 2 colonies were fed 4L of syrup 10 days ago & put on 8kg in that period. A good ivy flow makes all the difference.

OA. How much mite drop do you get?

Are folks using 2+g of OAV as this study found x7 OAV at 5 day intervals using 1g of OA didn’t reduce mite levels when brood was present

    APIVAR.

Think it was Randy Oliver who tested a couple of last year’s used Apivar strips he found discarded in the bottom of his truck. The mite knock down was as good as fresh strips. Will try and dig out the article.

    Apivar and OA vaping

This is the conclusion of the two studies I’ve found into resistance to Amitraz. Our findings confirm that amitraz resistance occurs in patches or “islands of resistance”, with a less severe reduction in treatment efficacy compared to pyrethroid resistance or coumaphos resistance in Varroa mite

    Apivar and OA vaping

My penny worth (two cents) opinion. A strategy to avoid selecting for resistance is to use alternate treatments to knock back the mite population. So Apivar late summer & if resistant mites persist the mid winter OA seems logical.

    Nut allergy labelling

There’s a Food Standards Agency food allergy and intolerance online training course. It’s free & you get a certificate. Cross contamination labelling is a voluntary decision made after an appropriate risk assessment. Here’s what the FSA say; A Precautionary Allergen Label (PAL) is a statement...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Coming towards the end of our main summer forage so time to balance out the nucs for overwintering. I like to get them all on a minimum of double brood. Plenty this year on triple or quadruple brood at the moment so it’s simple to donate and newspaper unite a queenless brood box. Apivar strips...

    Feeding with dry sugar

Omit the honey & vinegar: not necessary. Folk use too much water. 3% water works so for 5kg use 150ml. I dry mine in the oven at 60C for 1hr.

    Caught my eye

If you look closely the edge looks too irregular and not typical of those genetic white eyes? Was wondering if someone was practicing their queen marking on drones!
