First inspection of the year. Anything else?

Thank you all. I really do appreciate the help. I have nucs and foundation frames ready now. I just wasn't expecting them to be so well advanced, as I'd been following advice here to "not go inspecting yet, it's too early" Took me by surprise, and I didn't want to leave them with almost...

First inspection of the year. Anything else?

just running where I am past the forum, I 'think' I've had a successful day. Warm day, and bees flying well, so glad I took a proper look today. Had a plan in my head, and what I wanted to see. Though the sheer fascination takes over, watching them. Have done nothing but heft and check...

    Overwintered Super

Love these boxes Wilco, though my local agri supplier hasn't had any in for an age. Really like that I can stand on them and not fall through the lid 🤣.

    Which ones do you prefer

Think I'm going to try this, this year. The slot in my maisemore feeders seems to be just a little tall, I'm thinking it might be because I painted the inside though and have raised it a fraction. Had a fair few bees go under when the feed had almost run out, and not find their way back out...

    Thoughts?

no longer live there, but some family do, so I shall ask. It was much larger than the observation hives I've seen, I shall see if I can find a photo. On a mission now ;)

    Thoughts?

Our local museum when I was growing up [Wardown Museum Luton] had a very large, to me at the time, double sided observation hive, with a see through top tunnel leading outside. Used to spend hours there with my Mum & Dad. The sight of them has never left me, and is much to blame for what is...

    Wasps

We have a goat willow just outside the door, it has been alive with wasps the last few weeks, to the point you can actually hear them inside the house, with only a few bothering the hives at the end of the garden fortunately. Unfortunately other half left the door open the other night when she...

    Damaged Supercedure cell, what now?

Thank you JBM, I like a nice direct answer!

    Damaged Supercedure cell, what now?

Did an inspection, really just to check on stores, as they were really light, with only a teeny bit left a week ago, [after being almost honey bound recently too:(] so guessing their nectar had dried up, [though my other two nearby were still finding loads] so I've fed them2:1 syrup, and...

    Newbie from Shropshire

Hiya from another recent adopted Salopian, though been here less than two years, can't see me going anywhere else. Would have done the course at SBKA too, but work dictates I can't manage consecutive weeks very often. So I'm getting by with visits to the club apiary when it allows, picking...

    On the right track ?

Bit of an update: HIVE 1 The queen less hive, with one smallish capped queen cell, That cell has now dissapeared totally gone cleaned away, so no way of telling if it emerged, or was just broken down by the bees. So i've added a test frame with eggs this morning, so 7 days time I should...

    On the right track ?

Thank you Bobba, I've been chequer boarding, just inside the food store frames, so as not to break up the brood nest. Also been feeding 1:1 syrup and they've been taking that well. They are making inroads into drawing the fresh foundation, and I'm guessing what they are filling them with is a...

    On the right track ?

Just checking I'm on the right track. First year, and first real issues. As I've been caught out at away at work, And missing inspection day, due to horrendous weather. So it's unfortunately been 10 days since last inspection. 🙄 Three colonies, two from swarms attracted to hives, and third...

    Rain

Was working in Canary Wharf during the storm yesterday. Not seen rain like it for a very long time, was cascading down escalators in places, cars flooded in dips. Worst part was trying to drive back to Shropshire afterwards, added a good few hours to the journey.

    Thankyou

Hoping that one day I can do someone else a similar favour of too. Or indeed help Mark out in some way too. It's nice to know there are some altruistic people about still.

    Thankyou

I've just seen this post Mark. I was going to post a thank you to you, but wasn't sure if you would want naming in it. But now you've posted this I can say thank you publicly. And thank you for allowing me to visit your stunning location, especially having just suffered a theft. The...

    My First Inspection

I had my first bees arrive as a swarm into a hive I'd set up as a bait hive in my garden on the 28th May. Just as I was in about to leave for a few days away at work. ( I was late for work as so amazed watching them arrive). Before I left I filled the void inside with frames, well almost, as I...

    Swarm arrived in hive

I'm over the moon. The old brood comb was literally just floor sweepings, squished onto the top bar of a frame, and held on with an elastic band.

    Swarm arrived in hive

I had set my hives up as bait hives as not got bees yet. Seemed the logical thing to try, and with lots of advice here put some really old brood comb in, and a drop of lemongrass oil. Sealed all the floor etc. And left it be. Last few days the odd bee visited, then the numbers grew, and you...
