    Hive materials traditional wood?

Also on the bumble bees thriving note, all the nests I have seen this year are generally in man made or at least man treated materials like tantalised timber. And they seem to love fibreglass insulation.

    Hive materials traditional wood?

Cedar has been used to make hives for a rather long time and it's not a new material to be using. Poly hives are more modern but have been in use for perhaps 30+ years. As said previously were the problem not the material they live in, personally I don't see hive deaths for any un explained...

    Hive materials traditional wood?

I can't say that I know of any research but I would imagine the fact that most hives seem to be made from cedar and don't need to be painted or treated with harsh chemicals to preservers to make them last. Also the wooden frames are untreated too, I tend to think in the past with beekeepers...

    Moving bees in other countries.

I have had entrances come open while moving before. It's hard to say if you loose many bees but they usually as suggested before just beard on the front of the hive.

Poly Hives - Do they NEED painting ?

They will be worth more when you sell them though if painted and in good condition.

Poly Hives - Do they NEED painting ?

The uv can penetrate the box completely and will degrade inside and out. I have some swienty boxes that are perhaps 20 years old and they are very brittle. After talking to swienty they advised me that it's because they were unpainted.

Poly Hives - State of play

I have 20 modern beekeeping langstroth hives and 12 of their nucs. Love these hives compared to the others. I also have around 20 wooden langstroth hives and 30 odd wooden supers which I use with the poly with no problem.

    Maqs

I have feel very much the same that it is better used earlier. And a full dosage in my polys was very harsh on the bees but they have come through it and allot stronger for it to.

    Selling my bees

Auctions never usually reflect the true value of things. Some times they are up and others they are down. Low prices means that most were not their to buy bees.

    has anynbody started Qrearing yet?

I have been getting my kit ready but won't be for another couple of weeks yet. I don't think their are sufficient drones about just yet. Well not here anyway, their is plenty to emerge though.

    Why put supers on top?

It's more the way the bees do it, they have a nice arc of stores around the top of the frame that extends upwards, I don't see the same on the. Bottom of the frame.

    Drone brood

Chances are the varroa are in the drone brood that is their so don't transfer the frames of drone brood. Plus it will be bad comb now and won't be much good for worker brood.

    Bees in roof

You can get something called a boar scope which you can use to look inside an engine. Drill a hole in the wall and stick it through and look ok the screen to see if you can see the bees. Easier then demolishing the house.

    painting poly

Very durable indeed just don't drop a full super on a corner. It disintegrates and your left with a mess. Not sure how a cedar super would survive as I haven't done that yet.

    painting poly

I have always had problems with poly feeders if you get any holes I the paint and the syrup gets underneath it separates the paint from the poly. Never had a problem with acrylic based masonry paint on the exterior but I can only comment from 4 years. Next time I will try an etch, if I paint...

    Which book next?

I have just read honey by the ton by Oliver field and found it rather interesting, it's a bit more of an insight to him but never the less a good read with some information you can take away with you.
