Very small swarm, not taking any syrup, WHY?

Some times I use a little bit of string dipped in the syrup and then dangled down Into the hive. Gives them something to walk up to.

    Maqs

I am with you on this one. Such a short time scale to get everything done and usually feeding is the biggest issue. Usually they just done take it down.

    Hive heating temperatures

Basically to small of a cluster for them to actually break and feed often enough to stay alive. I already lost two because of this. They have fondant and were taking it but died with their heads in the cells weeks later.

    Hive heating temperatures

Just a quick update now and it appears that the bees will now break cluster to move to the fondant and pollen patty that they now have. Although the weather is warmer it's still as low as -6 at night, the bees still feed at this temperature to. Previously they were clustered far away from any...

I have seen bees working yet quite allot, the pollen is like a dark caramel colour. The bees worked it extensively early in the year probably about march time though.

WARNING: MB Poly Lang Nuc Feeder

    Brush uncapper

Surly a heat gun is the easiest way, just flash it over the capping's and your done. It's rather cheap to and quicker then most methods mentioned.

    What to do?

If you would like to keep them you could add a frame of emerging bees if you think that they can support the extra frame. This would give them a boost which should give enough bees to brood rear more efficiently. after a few week you could give them another frame to help them along further...

    Minimum level of filtration

I was given a jar a while back that was literally full of black bits. Natural maybe but not sure I would like to eat it. Personally I use a double strainer with a fine nylon mesh. I am pretty sure I am leaving the goodness in and just taking out any of the nasty looking bits.
