    Why not harness tidal energy?

There is a long history of tidal power inthe UK - in fact going back to Roman times when they used the tides in the Thames estuary to power mills. The first real functioning tidal electricity scheme in Europe was in France at the River Rance ( and I am so old I can remember seeing it being built...

Are you thinking of joining octopus for electricity?

"Energy suppliers are required to take all reasonable steps to rollout smart meters to all of their domestic and small business customers by the end of December 2021. From January 2022 all gas and electricity suppliers will have binding annual installation targets to roll out smart and advanced...

    Wrapping Beehives for Winter

Similar story of the belief that Varroa destructor feeds on haemolymph. A poor / incomplete translation of an abstract of a paper written in Cyrillic / Russian in the 1970s, and everybody stuck with the idea for nigh on half a century before along came Samuel Ramsey and showed it to be nonsense...

    Wrapping Beehives for Winter

Kingspan has signifcantly better insulation properties than the Superglass (0.018 - 0.023, vs 0.036W/mK ). It also does not get soggy when wet. Beecozy claims an R value of 8 which (assuming it to be in US not SI units) is signifcantly worse than 50mm of Kinspan, and is much more expensive...

    Oxalic Acid Vaporizer

Putting carrots in a Sublimox surely cannot gum it up worse than does Apibioxal. On the other hand, if they ate the carrots, then perhaps the bees would be able to see in the dark and forage at night?

    Oxalic Acid Vaporizer

" * OA is a natural chemical, and is found in honey and most vegetables. * Carrots are 0.5% OA. One pound contains enough OA, 2.25g, to treat one hive. "

    insulation

My hives have acrylic crownboards surmmounted with copious slabs to PIR (aka Kingspan / Celotex). In the coldest months they get a little condensation at the edges, but not much. You get condensation on cold surfaces. If the crownboard is kept warm by the insulation on top, then there is no...

How to stop invasion of wasps

Another version of the wasp baffle. I have just had to make up another four following a wasp inundation.

    Honey price

Oh dear, somebody taking me seriously. It happens from time to time.

That's the end of the wasps.

Few wasps around here this year until the last couple of days of September, then a viscious inundation. Worst affected was one of my stronger colonies, but having put baffles on the entrances, the wasps seem to have backed off. Those hives with underfloor entrances were markedly less affected...

Yes, Simon the Beekeeper's ones are excellent quality.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Rushed response to a sudden wasp inundation I already had ones on some other hives. Whereas what I really need to do is get on and finish the underfloor entrances I had been knocking together

Bee suit prices - UK to Spain - £468 or €198...really?

Apples and oranges. I suspect the version sold by the Spanish importer probably corresponds to this,S36 Apiarist – Full suit | Product Categories | BJ Sherriff but the importer has been lazy and used the wrong illustrations. Nevertheless it is still cheaper there than here. I have seem the...

    Panic,big time

I bought one a couple of years ago at Beetradex, and unlike some of the other ***** things I bought at the same time, I use it. It was rather cheaper then and did not have the gold chain, which I do not imagine to be in the least bit practical ( and might attract the wrong sort of attention)...

    Panic,big time

I take the same approach to hive tools as I have taken to ball point pens and teaspoons, which similarly are prone to disappearing. Buy plenty of cheap ones and there will (almost) always be one lying around somewhere to hand. Simon the Beekeeper sells them for £2.99 each (which tells you what...
