LED lighting in the Honey House, big improvement.

Having been in the business, I would recommend that when buying LED (sorry, a TLA) luminaires, look for the CRI rating. This stands for Colour Rendering Index (OMG another TLA!) and refers to the quality of the light produced. Broadly speaking if it is above 90% it is good, if it is below 80% it...

UK pledges to restore pounds and ounces as Brexit benefit

To inject a little apiculture into the discussion... When I first started beekeeping and read that I needed to make up 2 to 1 syrup to see my bees into the winter, I was perplexed as to what this might mean. Was this 2 to 1 by weight; was this 2:1 by volume? My discovery that it meant 2 lb...

Since 1930 the inch has been defined by the BSI (sorry that is a TLA) in metric terms as 25.4mm. Boris is (at least) 91 years behind the times.

UK pledges to restore pounds and ounces as Brexit benefit

The prime minister's official spokesperson said: "Pounds and ounces are an easily understood and widely used unit of measurement. This is one small part of a wide-ranging drive across government to establish the right regulatory environment to support jobs and growth across the UK."

Bakers'. Had it been beekeepers' fondant, the choice would more likely have been a second hand Austin Metro. But had he gone for syrup made from granulated sugar, perhaps a Roller might have been on the cards...

UK pledges to restore pounds and ounces as Brexit benefit

From my oilfield days I can remember having to calculate the volume, in barrels, of an oil well that was 7 1/2 inches in diameter, with the depth given in metres.

Fat Shark / The Apiarist (see Cut more losses - The Apiarist) identified this as what he could buy with money saved by feeding fondant rather than giving honey back to his bees: Used Ferrari 360 Spider car for sale in Exeter | Official Ferrari Used Car Search

    Rapid feeding / dead bees

Not a clumsy beekeeper. Compared to the total numbers in the colony it is not a lot, but it is distressing to see. I stick sand to the slippery slopes to help them get a grip. It seems to help: If you use PVA glue, make sure it is wateproof PVA glue

Then you will appreciate my wonderful new invention: Hives without holes! Unfortunately this may not turn out to be a great money earner for me as Section 3 Patents Act 1977 requires that: "An invention shall be considered as involving an inventive step if, having regard to the state of the...
