    Wax moth: Seeking advice

My initial thought was, are you sure they were wax moths? In an apiary I used to attend there were frequently large moths under the roof. I think they were elm moths. The perceived wisdom at the time was that they must be wax moth as they were close to the hive, but clearly this wasn't correct...

    Gas vap worth it ?

I was re looking at Gas-vap on weds, thinking I must be only person thinking about it at this time of year lol. I have been interested in this device from the first postings that were put on here of the first device and the plans etc. I placed an order yesterday, I think it is worth it (to the...

    Wasp Traps - Experiment

The OP asked for other ideas for wasp bait, so here goes.... Trying to eradicate wasps around your hive with baits is futile, and possibly counterproductive, as the baits attract more wasps to your apiary. A much better idea is prevent them getting into the hive. Darlington type or Kewl...

    Heat gun for uncapping

I'd suggest you give it a go. It works great for me, in conjunction with an uncapping fork. I think that folk that say it caremalises the honey are overdoing it. You are just trying to roll back the cappings, and use the fork to completely open the cells. I have had a load of random folk...

    Eggs not appearing to develop

Yes, I had this a season or so ago in a hive for a new beekeeper I was mentoring. It was really odd, great laying pattern of lots of eggs, but nothing more, there was never any larvae or capped brood. If I recall correctly we culled the queen and combined the bees with another hive, and things...

    Varroa level everyone?

I've had very low counts too. I was thinking I have managed to breed hygienic bees, and I can make a fortune.... but I suspect the high temperatures might have had something to do with it... despite the homeostasis within the brood nest

    Honey with lemon and ginger

I know what you mean, I hate faff, so I can't imagine me doing this in large quantities to be honest... unless I can really ramp up the price to make it worth while!

    Honey with lemon and ginger

I was looking round the Internet today and saw a "recipe" for honey, lemon with ginger. https://www.simplegreensmoothies.com/recipes/green-healing/lemon-ginger-and-honey-all-natural-coldflu-remedy Whilst I do this myself, I was wondering if it would be possible to sell this as a premium...

Worker or drone foundation in the supers?

It's not impossible to think that they were using the drone comb in the super to raise drones, by putting it below the super, rather than for honey. Or they have made a mistake in ordering and not realised.

Worker or drone foundation in the supers?

I experience and see the same as beefriendly. I had a hive that were determined to raise drones, and make drone cells in the worker foundation in a couple of frames in the supers, which they were very reluctant to fill, and even more reluctant to cap, which is a pain. I wouldn't put drone...

    Queens or Drones

What I was trying to say, from my original post is that I had always worked on the basis of trying to raise queens from my "best" hive, to mate with the drones from my other hives. But if I turn this on it's head, is it just as effective to try to get my most productive hive to raise as many...

    Queens or Drones

Agreed, but if I could have more of the genes available from my best queen, wouldn't it be better?

    Queens or Drones

I have a particularly good hive this year, and will attempt to breed from it next year. I say attempt, as I am invariably playing catchup on QC's. But it I had a thought, would I be better to get this hive next year to raise QC's through the various methods, or lots and lots of drones, by...

    Big wasp survey

I really wouldn't want the job of opening up the packets of dead wasps, and other insects rotting in whatever juice has been used. I can't imagine that they will get too many useful samples. I would have thought a more productive way would have been to trust folk to do initial identification first

    Asian hornet, and floors

Really good article in the bbka magazine this month about Asian hornet, and the use of the modified floor which is commercially available to trap wasps etc name escapes me), and the use of mouse guards. It got me thinking as I use home made modified dartington floor (underfloor entrance...

    Asian hornet

Can we begin to assume that with the lack of reported capture of Asian hornets in traps means that the tetbury incident last year has been contained, or is it too early to tell?

    Floor depth variations...

Same as a few folk have said, I have changed all my Darlington type underfloor entrance floors to accommodate OA vaporiser, by adding various thickness bits of batons I have had lying around, with no brace comb... so far anyway!
