What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I started making up a woodpecker frame for my hive. Just need to attach the netting to it and it will just drop over the top of the hive, and will be easily removed if I need to get in there for any reason. I'll attach pics once it's finished

What did you do in the Apiary today?

As it was pretty mild with only a light breeze yesterday early evening I took the Apivar out (not too bad to release), put insulation under the roof and strapped up. The girls were very chilled indeed and it was a pleasure to have a last look at them (didn't take frames out, just looked in on...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

My hive is cedar with a UFH, it comes in at around 12kg (floor, standard BB with 11 frames, crown board and roof). My girls are really busy bringing in stacks of Ivy pollen at the moment too.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Weighed my hive, which came in at a respectable 33kg, so i'm happy that they have plenty of stores for winter. I'll take the Apivar out later in the week and insulate the roof then strap them up.

    Swarm in Compost Bin

The OP was 2 years ago, so hopefully they made it ;)

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Indeed, took me about 2 minutes to change it.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Bought a second hand poly nuc recently (a Maisemore with 3 brood boxes, floor and lid) so I gave that a good clean off and replaced the varroa mesh (it has started to rust). Happy with how it's come out and may well buy a new floor (or make one) and lid to give me 2 nucs in case i need them.

Sold Bees and Equipment No longer for sale.

Nope, it went very quiet so I gave up.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Inspected over the weekend, applied varroa strips, all looks good and not too many wasps around (i'm on a UFE which I've also reduced to about 3"/75mm wide).

    Hive stand

Interestingly The Apiarist showed a very similar design in his blog: The ultimate hive stand? - The Apiarist

Anyone bringing shade to their bees for the forecast heat wave?

All i've done is take out the varroa board (i'm on an open mesh UFE) and have draped some white PVC sheet (like a tarp) off the roof and down the side that gets the most sun during the day. This should help to keep the temps down a bit for them (I did put my hand on the side of the hive...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

But, are they invasive, or just non-native? I think evidence would suggest they aren't particularly invasive, don't you? I don't see the Horse Chestnut trees taking over swathes of spare land at a rapid rate and posing a threat to native species, or plum trees (in fact, mine are really static)...

Sold Bees and Equipment No longer for sale.

Morning, are these still for sale? I have sent you a PM about them. Thanks

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I must say I find it odd that people feel HB is OK - it's a non-native invasive plant that is damaging our own native wildlife. As someone who fly fishes I've seen, first hand, the way it spreads and blankets all of our native plants. it's horrendous stuff and damaging our own eco-systems as...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Had a visit from the SBI this afternoon, as he was in the area and we've had EFB within 3km. Glad to say my girls got a clean bill of health, are very healthy and have expanded rapidly (2.5 frames of brood added since Sunday!) They were a nuc that I bought home 4 weeks ago on 3 frames. The SBI...

What is the recommended space above a frame in a National hive - bottom bee space.

I made a bottom bee space National brood box and the top of the frames sit flush with the top of the box.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

[yesterday] I made a small stand for my hive with an alighting board, that is now on the hive (the hive sits on 3 plastic pallets, so this stand doesn't have legs). I've also started getting the bits together to make a 'cage' to protect against woodpeckers over the winter (we get a fair few...

    Wasps

Not seen many here either, in East Devon. I'm on UFE on my hive so i'm presuming they should be pretty safe with that(?)

    EFB

Just had a second notification of EFB within 3km of my apiary, the last notification was just over a month ago.
