    Hive Monitor

I got a Broodminder hive monitor for Christmas - I was stuck for ideas of what my brother could get me and thought it would be a good toy to play around with. It's still sitting in my office at the moment as I don't want to open up a hive to put it in yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing what...

    Beekeeping Association Equipment

Obviously it depends on your situation and what type of beekeeper you are. I'm certainly not going out and buying one tomorrow, and even if I did have a a few hundred pounds I could freely spend on one I wouldn't without an honest review from someone I trust, or a hands on go myself. Common...

You actually don't have to lift the hive onto it. That's the difference

    Beekeeping Association Equipment

Just for clarification, I know several others have posted images of sack barrows, converted wheelbarrows etc. but I was thinking more of a proper hive lift that allows you to raise and lower a hive, as well as transport it. With a sack barrow or wheelbarrow/trolley you've still got to lift the...

    Beekeeping Association Equipment

Of course, it's not such a problem when there is more than one of you, but if you can't find a volunteer it becomes a much trickier prospect on your own.

    Beekeeping Association Equipment

I have to say, although I'm a member of my local association I've never even considered borrowing extraction equipment from them. Having to organise in advance when I want to extract and book out an extractor, particularly at the same time of year as everyone else is just too much trouble for...

    Bee(keeper) space

I have half a small shed (shared with the garden tools, including the chipper and lawn mower), a small cupboard in the office (where I store beeswax, medications, gloves and ingredients for cosmetics), boxes of honey jars in the cupboard under the stairs (next to the front door for easy sales)...

    Numbered discs for beehives.....

I number hive stands (with stick on house numbers), and also name queens (alphabetically floral names - I appreciate it'll get tricky if/when I ever get to X or Z ;) ). I use chalk pens to write the name of the queen on the side of her brood box. That way the name generally stays with the...

    Vaping newbie

I vape through the entrance. I block off the gap around the inspection tray at the back of the hive. I just pull the inspection tray out a couple of inches, lay an old cloth across it, and this jams into the gap when I push the tray back in. When it comes to the entrance of the hive, I...

    GasVap frustrations

I find it great for four hives (don't have any more yet), and don't have any issues with it doing them in one session. I do keep a bucket of water beside me as I vape though. When I pull a hot cap off it goes straight in the bucket to cool, ready for its next use, and if I can't find the scoop...

    GasVap frustrations

I just use the handle of the measuring scoop to clear the tube between each vape so that I don't get any blockages.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I've been doing multiple vapes too because I just don't think they had a broodless period at all. We had so many warm periods throughout December that they were out flying regularly. When it was cold it was literally for a day or two.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Popped my beekeeping suit on to check the fondant in a nuc, and realised I still hadn't washed it after a gardening job a couple of months ago. There's a climbing rose on the fence behind a couple of my hives, so I'd worn it when I'd had to cut back the rose and retrain it on a new bigger bit...

    A beekeepers christmas day

Christmas decorations went up inside and out over the weekend. Big tree in the dining room, small tree in the hallway, and garlands all over the place inside. The front garden gets the tasteful warm light mini Christmas trees, house stars and lights around the Rowan tree, while the back garden...

Installing Kingspan/Celotex above the Crown Board

I have insulation cut to fit snuggly inside the roof, which stays there permanently all year round. In the winter I also add a 50mm deep eke between the crownboard and roof that has a second slab of Kingspan in it.

Queen excluders not up to the job!

I seem to remember those being thrown out by Theapiarist.org (Autumn cleaning - The Apiarist) in his recent clean out because they warp so much. I guess you haven't had that issue?
