Any scouts at your swarm trap?

I've definitely had interest in my bait hive over the last few days. When I inspected my hives last weekend I saw a few drones, but not great numbers yet, and no sign of any swarm prep. However, a few members of my LBKA have already collected swarms in the lovely warm weather we've had down...

    Bees collecting water

I have 100 mini phlox plants on the patio at the moment and they've been buzzing with bees most of the day.

    Bees collecting water

Mine are also focused on water collection this morning. At this time of year there is a lot of brood rearing going on, which requires a lot of water. I don't know what your weather has been like in Derby, but down here it's literally been freezing with bouts of sleet and snow and strong winds...

    strimming around hives

Like Jules59, we have a few cheap veils dotted around the garden sheds in case we need them. However, I have osteospermum or creeping phlox planted around my hives so I don't need to mow or strim the areas directly around them. It looks nice, and keeps the weeds down. I just have a couple of...

Quiz what's going on with the frames.

Thanks for posting the pics CGF. Luckily, I haven't seen results of robbing in my own hives before, but I was pleased I recognised it straight away in your photos, just from others' descriptions. Personally I didn't think it needed any other info. The pictures were more than enough.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Did my first inspection of the year yesterday. Spotted two Queens, both laying beautifully, with 7+ frames of brood and plenty of nectar and pollen coming in. Nuc queen also laying well and given a super of extra space to keep them occupied for a while (don't have a second brood that fits this...

    Overwintered Super

You could spin out the frames and keep the 'honey' just for feeding back to the bees. I overwinter my bees on double brood (lots of room for stores going into winter) so when I do my first inspection, if there are stll too many frames of stores left in there I'll pull them out and replace with...

Attracting swarms - what are the odds?

As good as lemongrass and other lures are, there's also a huge benefit of having a well-used bait hive and old comb - which of course you've got Beagle. Before I had bees I tried to get some free-bees with bait hives for two years. Of course at that point, having never kept bees I only had...

    First inspection of the year.

Certainly looking, and feeling, more like spring here today. The bees were flying well. I'll be popping a bit of fondant on a nuc that's a little light this weekend, and weighing the other hives, but it'll probably be another month before I open any of them up properly.

    101 uses for a smoker

I love doing smoked fish. Trout and haddock are great, but the most popular in our family is hot smoked salmon with salad leaves and a lovely zingy dressing of lime and honey from the bees. I keep meaning to try a smoked chicken, but haven't got around to it yet.
