What did you do in the Apiary today?

Well they have informed me that I have an enlarged heart, which has developed over time, but due to all the activities I've done it has acted as protection up until now. The next stage will be the medication that fits my tolerance levels

What did you do in the Apiary today?

The surgeon said I could run a marathon in a months time, I'll give that one a pass. The hospital have said to me that you are going nowhere until you have had the operation, they have a reputation to maintain. Some of the doctors and nurses don't speak English, so we get by with Google...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Still in hospital, awaiting a release date which should hopefully be Monday, conflicting information at the moment, the insurance informed my son they would send over a doctor to assist me back. The hospital have told me no decisions have been made

What did you do in the Apiary today?

OK, people may have noticed that I haven't been on the forum of late. I took the family on holiday setting off on the 29th July, for an overnight stay then a flight to Rome. Well it didn't go quite as planned, waiting to be seen by a receptionist at the hotel. I collapsed and went into cardiac...

Can I move a queen between apiaries whilst she is still in the process of mating.

@enrico moved hives from Shropshire to Somerset while queens were in mating mode and it didn't go as planned. You may find you will lose the queens because they have oriented to the one spot.

Abelo 12 frame queen excluder = no bee space

Saw this 2 weeks ago with a beekeeper who has the 12 frame, but he couldn't get them to fit, I worked it out in 2 seconds. However he told Abelo that he wasn't happy with them, they sent metal framed ones, again he struggled to fit them, 2 seconds later I fitted them, but it means that you have...

    Two queens after colony combining

Supersedure queen, otherwise the only other way to have multiple queens in a hive is by clipping the mandibular glands, which stops those queens producing queen substance.

Can you hive a swarm TOO soon?

Nothing to do with hiving a swarm too soon. If the nuc is too small they will look for something bigger, plus the scout bees would be doing waggle dances. Once the swarm is placed in a nuc or hive, add a queen excluder for a few days between the floor and brood chamber, if in a nuc with disc...

Plastic Frame and foundation - Thoughts please

Those would be the beehive bits ones, I used them when they first came out and I agree there is a tendency for them to warp, but easy to use and no hammering I was gifted one frame to try (prewaxed), which was used in a nuc and got drawn out well without any additional wax, whilst the beekeeper...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

You would have to check for queen cells before releasing the virgin.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

If the hive is hopelessly queenless, then a virgin can be run straight into the hive, but you could introduce the virgin in a cage with tabs open and no candy to stop her flying off when you introduce her. Mated queens are more readily accepted than a virgin this way (direct introduction, no...

    What are your"Favourite" mistakes?

Forgetting to remove the entrance block after moving hives and then getting a niggling feeling a few days later. I once left a hive closed for a week, luckily all was OK. Paynes nuc entrance discs become loose over time and close, so a pin, frame nail or drawing pin comes in handy as your...

    Dog catches car... Now what?

The fighting on the landing board, would be 2 rival hives looking for a suitable home.

    Dog catches car... Now what?

They could have been moved the evening they were caught if you had an isolation apiary. Feed them after 3 days and when brood is being capped look at the open cells and capped cells for disease. Once you are happy they are disease free move them to your shared apiary.

    Bee Vac Question

Don't place any frames inside the brood chamber, leave it as a void so that you don't damage the bees being sucked inside. In a separate box, if there is any comb treat it as a cutout and combine them at your new site when you have finished.

    Mail Order Queens

I was involved in a similar sort of project. A 1 minute video for a marketing degree. I taught a Lithuanian girl sword fencing at Uni as well as my own club. One hour of filming down to a minute video and she got an honours with distinction.

    Why are they starving?

Another reason is the lack of looking into hives and making an assessment of stores, people are put off looking into hives in poor weather, when a simple heft of a hive, any time of the year, would determine if action is needed and then open up. Regard it as a time sensitive operation.
