Am I mad to think of a long hive?

The perfect approach, it’s your hobby no one else can own it, enjoy it as the fantastic hobby that it is (y) For general help I would say buddy up with a beekeeper who understands bees and is not judgmental, select the advice you want to use and learn by the same mistakes we all make :D (y)

    Panic,big time

I am pleased to say I don’t :D the thought of anyone replicating some kind of pirate would be too scary. Best place for the hive tool is in the hand ;) cheap as chips :D

    American foulbrood cleaning and control

The best thing we could do is to register our bees, the take up on Beebase is appallingly low. Maybe a compulsory system would be more effective, also help beekeepers understand that it is not necessarily a reflection on their beekeeping although some are obviously contributors. We also need...

    Struggling here, any help appreciated.

Look what nature does to insulate the ground, its as simple as leaves, in a bag maybe but that will allow moisture to collect on the surface and drip back into the hive possibly. An unpackaged fill of leaves packed tight I guess would do the job well, I used to use carpet squares from the local...

    Newbee shopping list

:D Are you trying to drag me into another debate on effective cheap alternative ;) I had a quick look on Amazon at prices, £2.00 to £26.99 a beekeepers dream/nightmare, cheaper to buy your own ducklings and grow them on for 6 -8 weeks and have a lifetimes supply

    American foulbrood cleaning and control

It is so distressing to get either EFB or AFB nearly 4 years ago I get EFB in one of my breeding apiaries with 48 hive 1 hive infected. I had nearly 300 hives in an area of less than 6 miles, 4 apiaries within 2 miles and 2 apiaries around 200 yards apart. The two had 96 hives, in the first...

You are right there is a lot of free stuff that can be used, if you want reliable smoke then the fuel needs to be of a measured energy, I like my smoker to stay alight.

I could not see any discussion on the following, Smoker fuel, if you feel the need to use the smoker, or you could practice your beekeeping and control them with a water spray. The advantages of the water spray are, you can add smelly to distract them when wanting to unit in a hurry. When you...

Blowing on them also works .......eventually, personally I would rather have the reliable kit I need to do the job, I find it difficult to grip the quill. Personal preferance only.

If they have to paint it it's probably mild steel and will rust.

You can save the api-harikari for another season, if the wrong syrup mix is the biggest faux pas you commit in the next few years you will soon be a master beekeeper :D

Yellow painted hive tools are generally made from mild steel, buy a decent stainless one and keep it in your hand, when not in the soda box. Learn to work with it, like it was one of your fingers.

    Langstroth polly hive sale

Amongst other things we have Langstroth Polly hives on sale this month, Langstroth are the world most popular, estimated at around 75% of the worlds hives with slight variations for different continents. This makes using Langstroth so much cheaper than any other hive system.

    Keeping records

And why is that, what heinous crime have I committed now? wanting to close down a thread maybe, It has produced nothing but derision toward me personally and my company, I believed and still do that HMF is a serious problem for bees. I would like to leave the thread with everyone still having a...
