    Hive insulation

This is really not right, either you have been sold a scheme that cannot work or you don’t understand the basic principles of construction, you are using organic materials that are “live” if you do not ventilate you will create the perfect environment for woodworm and bugs, even treated timber...

    Hive insulation

It is part of building regs :)

    Hive insulation

Oh thanks for that misinformation, cold bridges and cavities are not classed as ventilation. With your theory, your roof tiles are glued down and sealed just like the vents above your DPC and lets not forget the trickle vents in the windows, ventilation is essential. I am just working on my...

    Hive insulation

That is totaly wrong information. Having been a property developer for almost 30 years and still own a number of properties I can categorically say ventilation is essential, look up building regs if you are not sure.

    Hive insulation

If you look at your house you will notice that no areas are completely sealed, Kingspan for instants is left loose to allow for essential air flow. The insulation will still do its job if you leave a small gap to allow air movement. If you are worried about moisture then use a carpet tile above...

Honeybees use social distancing to protect themselves against parasites

I have come late to this thread but have read most of them, things like swarming and feral colonies always fascinate me. Tom Seely in the wisdom of the hive suggests that feral colonies don’t see an anniversary, bees die and so do the mites. As for all the stats that are being bandied around...

    Paradise or abelo poly national.

The locking allows a little bit more resistance to wind for instance, you have to put the box on properly meaning they don’t slip apart, and allow things like robbing. For me top bee space is a must. I leave the rails out of all mt nationals to create a top space.

    Plastic Frames

It best if using plastic foundation in frames and heat to keep them in the plastic in the frame it helps prevents it warping. No one makes a big enough single sheet suitable for commercial, I know one commercial customer who tacks a melt of plastic together using a brood and a super foundation.

    Plastic Frames

A better option is to buy the plastic foundation in a frame, usually the a cheaper option the plastic can be scrapped off then one of those tile steam cleaner to complete the clean, rewax and away you go, we generally clean every 2-3 years I have used them for around 15 years. The only pain is...

BeeBase, the Good the Bad and the Ugly !

Fizzle :- Why does Ireland import so many bees if this is your naive impression of what happens in reality. It is usually those shouting that have no clue as to the real position, just dragged along by hysterical comments from associations like the BBKA. Interesting that they seem to have now...

BeeBase, the Good the Bad and the Ugly !

Almost everything we put on a page electronically can be found by anyone easily, make a comment on this site then search the subject in google and you will probably find it. I purchased my first computer in 1979/80 I ran my newspaper on and other companies on it, it was the size of a desk real...

BeeBase, the Good the Bad and the Ugly !

I believe that the cascade system is meant to be used only if no other treatment for the particular problem is not available, in the case of varroa we have options already licensed. A point worth making I think.

BeeBase, the Good the Bad and the Ugly !

A lot of smoke screens, the benefit V risk is well documented, as beekeepers we need to know were other potential risks are or at least the SBI needs to know but often do not.

    Fondant vs Full Super

The wax will also get contaminated by the chemicals you add to the colony, therefor you should melt down the wax and make some candles maybe, just follow the manufacturers guidelines

    Overwintering a nuc

We do the same, but drop a sheet inside so it doesn’t get dislodged by wind or whatever, its hard to do retrospectively, I have few nucs from USA that have no vents just a 40mm ish opening about 150mm from the floor, a real cozy box :), what the Americans do is cover the bottom with straw or...

    Which budget wood hive

Taking my life in my hands with this response, honest and straightforward is my only approach. Until people realise they know the price of everything and the value of nothing we cannot move forward, we can easily move to more sustainable products at a price in the short term. Most small...
